The first few days after Cameron moved into the main house went on without a hitch. I had spent a few nights without him before, sure now was different but I handled it well. But once I hit one week without him things started to go downhill.
Hannah no longer brought me things. I colored all the pages in the coloring books. I read all of the books she had given me. She no longer brought me the daily newspaper. The boredom set in.
I tried cooking to pass the time, and I taught myself how to cook several really delicious dishes. But they sat in the fridge, unfinished because I no longer had anyone to help me finish them.
I started talking to the walls a lot to. I am by nature a very talkative person and no I was locked in a shed with no one.
I only left the shed every three or so days now. That was how often Hannah's dad came to take me to the grocery store.
I slept in the bed that used to be Cameron's. Hannah's dad told me Hannah said it was mine now. I sometimes would lay in the bed, holding the sheets to my face hoping to get even a shred of Cameron's scent.
But he wasn't there anymore. I was alone for good now.
I started questioning my existence around week two. Why was I still there? I had no purpose. I couldn't do anything constructive, productive or creative. I had no interaction with other living things.
I thought about trying to make a run for it, but the only shoes I had were two pairs of heels. The ones I had been wearing at the club and the ones Hannah had given me.
Besides that I didn't have any way to carry water. I would get thirsty quick and I had no clue how close or far I was to the nearest town.
But a little break came around two and a half weeks after the wedding. Hannah's dad came in in the morning with a tool box and told me Hannah had given him permission to take down the cameras. She had said that they weren't needed anymore.
"Are they any closer to finding Cameron and I?" I whispered to him as I handed him a screwdriver.
"I keep trying to sneak out when I can and leave a trail, but it's a little hard to be discreet about it so that Hannah doesn't catch on."
I nodded and handed him a wrench.
"Trust me, I want you guys to be rescued." "I agreed to go along with this almost six months ago because I was afraid of Hannah." He handed me the dome covering the camera. "You guys don't deserve this and I'm willing to accept the wrath of Hannah if it means you guys get to go home."
I set the dome down on the floor. He handed me a few screws and I set those down to. "Thank you." "How is Cameron doing?" "I'm really worried about him..." I mumbled.
"He's adjusting." Hannah's dad rubbed his beard. "He's a little stressed, Hannah's being pretty pushy." "But overall, he's ok."
"That's good." "I feel really bad about signing him off to her."
"Don't feel bad." "Hannah has always been a manipulative person." He smiled as he pulled the camera off of the wall. "You really care about him don't you?"
I smiled and laughed quietly. "Yeah, he makes me feel things I never knew I could feel."
"I had that once." He stepped down from the ladder. "Believe it or not, Hannah was raised by two happy parents for a while." He looked at the floor. "But then her mother got really sick and well she died when Hannah was seven."
"She mentioned a brother before the wedding."
"Yeah, she has a brother." "He's three years older than her." "They were really close when they were young." "But a few years ago they got into a big fight."
"Over what?"
"Well, believe it or not, this whole kidnapping Cameron Dallas thing was not an overnight decision." "She started becoming a little obsessed four years ago." "I shrugged it off." "So she liked a bunch of cute guys who were touring the country." "I figured I'd let it slide because she had finally moved back in with me and things were a little tense."
"She said she was raised by her aunt." "What happened?"
"Well, she did live with her aunt from the time she was seven until she was seventeen." "I regret how I handled my wife's death." "We were in love, and it was a deep love like you and Cameron have." "We had been together since we were in middle school." His eyes twinkled. "She was the love of my life."
"So she resents you for her having to live with her aunt for ten years and her brother doesn't like her because she's obsessed with Cam?"
"Yes." "And I go along with her plans because two years ago." He pulled the collar of his shirt back to reveal a large scar. "She stabbed me when I told her she couldn't just go to Cameron's house and confess her love to him." "I told her he probably didn't want to be with her." "Ever since then I just go with what she says because I don't want to have any more near death experiences."
I nodded. "I can understand."
"But, I'm done playing along." "I want you and Cameron to be free and happy." "You two love each other and you shouldn't be kept apart because Hannah's crazy."
He set up the ladder under the camera in the bedroom. He dismantled in and then collected up the parts in a bag.
"Well, now you can do whatever you want I guess."
"If you can, can you try to find a way to exchange letters between me and Cam?" "I really miss him."
"I think I can manage that." He placed his hand on my shoulder. "Hang in there, Kate."
He left and I went back to my daily activities. I vowed to hang in there. It was June. Cameron and I's birthdays were in three months. The only thing I wanted for my nineteenth birthday was to be able to see my family.
I stood tall and tried to make myself as busy as possible. I had faith that we would be rescued soon.
