"In eight days we will have been here four months." Cameron set his plate in the sink.
"Yup." "And Hannah is still crazy." I hoisted myself up onto the kitchen counter. "Please, do tell me again about her making you propose to her."
"C'mon, Kate." "I hate this story."
I nudged him with my foot. "Come on." "I want to make sure I write the story down exactly right."
"Are you really going to write a memoir about this?"
"Absolutely." "I am already a writer and this is how I deal with my problems." "Now please, how did the day go?"
Cameron took a breath and leaned against the counter next to me. "Well, it started off as a normal day about a week ago." "Hannah's dad came and got me and took me up to the main house." "We ate French toast for breakfast."
I scribbled down the story in the second journal Hannah had given me. "Ok, so what happened after breakfast?"
"She had me sit down in the living room and watch Chasing Cameron."
"Well it could have been worse."
"True." "So the whole time I was watching the movie she was in the kitchen." "She was making a lot of noise too." "Around noon she brought me a sandwich and a glass of water." He paused. "By that point, the movie was over."
I looked up from the journal. "What did you do after lunch?"
He rubbed his chin. "Oh!" "She set up the Xbox and I played Fortnite for a while."
"And did you play as Cameron Dallas?"
"No, Hannah has me play as her profile." He shrugged. "It kinda works though because all the guy players take it easy on me."
I laughed. "Gotta benefit from the situation we're in somehow."
"Yeah." "So eventually around six she came back into the living room." "She had a box in her hand." He sighed. "Right then I knew what was about to happen." "She handed me the box and told me it was for me to use that night."
"And you just took the ring box?"
"Well no." "I got up from the couch and tried to give it back to her." "I told her I didn't want it or to propose to her." He clenched his jaw. "She did not take that well."
"I can imagine." I nibbled on the cap of my pen.
"Of course she got really mad." "She told me that she was in charge of our relationship and that she got to make the decision that we were getting married." "She told me that I was going to propose to her at dinner and that that was the end of the discussion."
I nodded and kept writing. "And after that?"
"Well I set the ring box down on the end table and basically said no."
"Did you really say just no?"
"Well." "I may have said a few things about how I'd never love her and I couldn't forgive her for making you push me away." "That really made her angry."
"Yeah, you definitely shouldn't have mentioned me."
"Well, it was the truth." "But she basically threw back at me that she had asked for your permission and you had given it to her." He turned to face me. "Which I've always been curious about." "Did you actually tell her you were ok with it?"
I set my journal down on the counter. I bit my lip and reached for his hand. He took it and I looked into his eyes.
"I did." "She offered me something that at that moment of desperation, I couldn't say no to."
"What'd she offer you?"
"She told me I could write a letter to my sister." "She gave me the paper and told me I was allowed to write anything as long as it didn't give any information as to what my true whereabouts were." "Cameron." I started to cry. "Please don't be mad at me."
He held my face in his hands. "How could I be mad at you?" "You haven't seen your sister in months, you missed her birthday." "I could never be mad at you." "Hannah has been abusing you since the very beginning, don't think for a minute any of this is your fault."
I nodded. He wiped my tears away with his thumbs. He leaned in and rested his forehead on mine. "I know we haven't been able to have a day like this in a while and I don't know when we'll get this opportunity again, but just know I care a lot about you." "Nothing you could ever do would change how I feel about you." "I love you, Kate." He kissed me softly on the cheek.
"I love you to." "I'm really glad that we got tonight." I looked up at the camera. "I never thought Hannah would actually leave for a night."
"Well, according to her, she's out getting my wedding ring tonight."
"Never thought this would be what your first marriage would be like."
"Trust me this is not an ideal situation." "I wish I could fight it more." He kissed the back of my hand. "I feel like I'm letting you down."
"Why?"
"Well, this should be us." "It should be you and I picking out wedding bands."
"Is that our plan for whenever this ends?" I half smiled.
"Only if that's what you want." He kissed me softly on the lips.
The kiss deepened as he pulled me closer. I ran my fingers through his silky hair which had grown down to almost his shoulders by now. I wrapped my legs around his hips. I got lost in his soft lips before I felt the counter disappear from below me.
I had missed Cam. I had missed us. I knew I wanted a future with Cam where I didn't have to hide and sneak around if I wanted to be affectionate with him. But we had to get to the future first.
