"Cameron, are we there yet?" I tried to turn my head to face him but my neck was stiff. I licked my dry lips. I tried to remember to keep breathing. I felt waves of chills and I was incredibly thirsty. I glanced down at the blanket wrapped around my foot. I had wrapped it tightly but I had bled through it. We had been driving for forty-five minutes and it didn't seem like we were any closer to a town.
Cameron reached across the console and shook my shoulder. "Kate, keep your eyes open, ok?" "I promise we're getting close."
My eyes fluttered. My eyelids felt like they were made of lead. I was fighting desperately to keep them open, but I felt myself slipping. How much longer could I keep bleeding like this?
"Kate, please don't do this." "I love you." "We've made it this far, you can't die now." He held my hand. "We're free, Kate, we did it!" "We got out and we're going to get to live together for real now." He took his hand back to wipe the tears from his eyes. "Kate please, stay with me."
Then I saw it. Lights everywhere. Buildings. A break in all of the sun baked earth. It was smooth and gray like concrete instead of the ruddy red color I had spent the last hour looking at.
I felt the urge to reach out of my window. I felt them. Raindrops, cool, crisp raindrops falling on my outstretched palm.
We pulled up to a hospital with shining glass windows covering the front. The windows sparkled in the setting sun. It was beautiful. I smiled. We were free. We could go home.
Cameron ran out of the truck while I sat in the passenger seat humming to myself. I held my hand out, catching little raindrops as they fell from the sky. They left no stains on the ground but quenched my skin.
Finally Cameron returned with nurses and a gurney. They picked me up and laid me down on the gurney. I lay there, staring up at the blue sky. It was streaked with beautiful purple clouds. Raindrops kissed my face. I giggled.
But they didn't lead me to the hospital. They led me further out, into a field. The gurney stopped and I felt one of the nurses put his arms under me. He lifted me off of the gurney and placed me down in a hole.
I looked up at Cameron who was leaning over the hole. I tried reaching for him, I wanted to tell him I loved him. But my hand pressed against the cool front of the glass box I was in. I pressed my palm on the glass and stared up at Cameron.
A single tear fell down my cheek as I watched the two nurses shovel clay over me. Slowly, the world went dark and my Cameron disappeared.
"You look happier, you do." I blew a kiss, but I knew he didn't see it. He was already gone.
I wanted forever with him, I just didn't know how short forever was going to be.
