"Good morning sunshine." Cameron whispered to me as he brushed a lock of my hair out of my face.
I slowly opened my eyes and smiled. I looked into his beautiful brown eyes, so sweet and soft lashes.
I was recovering well. I had spent most of the last week in this bed, in his arms. Every day brought new achievement. I was eating soft foods now, mostly pudding and applesauce. My feeding tube was set to come out today. I was still too scared to look at my feet. Cameron told me that they were pretty messed up, but not to worry.
But today was important. The nurse told me last night that today she was going to call in the physical therapist and we were going to try walking with crutches. According to her my left foot was still in pretty bad shape and they didn't want me putting any weight on it yet.
"Hey, don't steal my pudding!" I swatted Cameron's spoon away.
Cameron stuck his tongue out and returned to his cereal.
He finished his cereal and set his bowl and the tray on the table by the wall. "How are you feeling today?"
"Excited." I scrunched my face. "Nervous?" "I still don't know what my feet look like and I haven't walked in over three weeks." I shrugged. "I don't know what to expect."
Cameron sat back down next to me and wrapped his arm around me. "Well, I saw them when they were first stitched up and they looked bad then." "It was about a ninety-five stitches."
"Great that makes me feel better." I rolled my eyes.
"Hear me out." "I took a look at them yesterday while you were napping and, yeah they're pretty scarred up but, they look a lot better. He took my hand. "I'm proud of how far you've come and I think you're going to do great."
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I hope so."
An hour later the nurse came into my room with a man I hadn't seen before. I assumed he was the physical therapist.
"Hey, Kate, how are you doing today?" She asked with a smile.
"Pretty good, I'm a little hungry."
"Well, I can get you some soup and a drink in a bit but first, we're going to try to walk!" She beamed at me and looked up at Cameron.
I smiled hesitantly.
"Ok, so Cameron if you can come around here."
Cameron walked around the bed to stand next to me.
"Jeff is going to take one of her arms and you're going to take the other." She motioned for me to turn to the side of the bed.
I turned around and let my feet dangle off the side of the bed. I saw my feet, wrapped in gauze and mesh socks. That's all I wanted to see. I didn't want to see what was under all the coverings.
"Ok, now Jeff's going to show you how to hook your arm under hers and lift her to her feet."
Jeff demonstrated to Cameron how to transfer my weight onto his shoulder.
"Are you ready?" Jeff looked down at me.
I nodded.
"One...Two...Three." They lifted me from the bed and onto the floor.
I stood there, supported, on my right foot. It was a little tender, but it wasn't unbearable. My legs felt weak, I hadn't realized how weak they'd be after three weeks of not being used.
I looked up, the nurse was handing me crutches. I took them and slipped them under my arms. I put my weight on them as Cameron and Jeff slipped their arms out from around me.
"Whenever you're ready, try to walk to the door." Jeff said calmly.
I nodded and took a breath. I was scared out of my mind.
Cameron placed his hand on the small of my back. "You got this." He whispered in my ear.
I nodded and put more weight on my right foot. I put the crutches out and pulled myself forward.
Success, I had taken a step.
Cameron, the nurse and Jeff all cheered.
Tears started running down my face. I turned to Cameron. "Get this on video please, I want my mom to see that I'm walking again."
Cameron nodded and pulled his phone out of his pocket. He recorded me as I took five more steps to the door.
"I knew you could do it, Kate." He said breathlessly in my ear. He held me in a tight embrace, stroking my hair. "We're going to get through this."
"I can do it." I giggled in his ear.
He held my face in his hands and kissed me softly at first, but the kiss got deeper and deeper as we fell into each other's passion.
This was the love I wanted more than anything in life. Cameron and I had been at rock bottom together and now we were climbing to the top. We were together, in love, and that was all that mattered.
I buried my face in his warm neck and breathed in his scent. I never wanted to let him go. He gave me hope and the strength to keep going. He was my rock.
He kissed the top of my head and whisked me off of my feet. He carried me back to my bed where he set me down gently. He kissed my cheek and set my crutches against the wall next to the bed.
"Wanna binge watch a show?" He smiled goofily.
"Only if I get to pick the show." I teased.
"Deal." He flopped down on the bed next to me and pulled me into his chest.
I kissed him softly on the cheek. I love Cameron Dallas.
