"I'm just like you..." "I get sad too." I hummed to myself as I danced around the kitchen. Hannah had tasked me with preparing sample meals for her wedding. She had given me all the things I had asked for and I was currently preparing a whole chicken.
"Ok chicky, so we're gonna go ahead and put this butter under your skin so you stay moist." I laughed. "That's such a weird word." I artfully sprinkled rosemary over the chicken. I dotted the skin with chopped garlic.
"I hope that they like these dishes." I smiled and opened the oven door. "I hope Cameron likes these dishes." "After all, I don't really care about impressing Hannah."
I looked at the calendar Hannah had brought me. Six days until their wedding. We had been here five months.
Hard as it was to believe we had almost acclimated to living in that shed. We had a sleep schedule, and eating schedule, we even agreed on showering times.
Hannah and I got along, I hadn't been to the closet in over a month. I got to cook and make her scrapbook. Hannah had gotten me more coloring books, on the condition that I didn't color with Cameron.
While I missed my life, I almost was ok with the way things were. I wanted to leave but, I wasn't planning on trying to run out into the desert any time soon.
I never lost faith that one day the police would break in and rescue us, but if this was how I got to spend my life with Cam, at least I was here with him.
I stood over the kitchen counter beating the potatoes into fluffy peaks. The green beans sat in ice water while I mixed a lemon and pepper sauce. Gravy sat simmering in a small pot on the back burner of the stove.
Finally it was all ready to be served. I got out the serving dishes and put the dinner in them.
I walked over to the corner of the dining room. Hannah had had her dad install a call button that was wired to the main house.
I pressed it a few times and stood next to the table looking at my creation.
About ten minutes later Hannah walked in with Cameron in tow.
"I assume dinner is ready?"
I nodded and hugged her. "I hope you like."
I got out two plates and began dishing out the dinner. I walked back over to them balancing a plate on each hand. I set the steaming plates down in front of Cameron and Hannah.
Hannah looked up at me confused. "You're not going to eat with us?" She stuck out her bottom lip.
"I can if that's alright with you." "I made the dinner for the lucky couple." I winked.
"Yes please join us!" Hannah smiled and picked up her fork. "So what do we have?"
"Well." I said from the kitchen. "We have rosemary garlic chicken, creamy buttermilk mashed potatoes, lemon green beans and home baked biscuits." I returned to the dining room table and sat down.
"This looks amazing, Kate." Cameron stabbed a couple green beans.
"I am so glad that you're making our wedding dinner." Hannah started cutting her chicken.
I stuffed my face with green beans, I actually didn't really want to talk. I didn't want to accidently speak my mind like I usually do when Cameron and I sit together and eat.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I forgot to get you guys drinks!" I stood up and walked quickly back to the kitchen. I grabbed three glasses from the cabinet. I set them down on the counter and opened the fridge. "What would you guys like?"
"I'll have whatever juice you have, Kate." Cameron said from the table.
"I'll take water." Hannah turned around in her seat to face me.
I nodded and poured Cameron a glass of apple juice. I quickly filled Hannah and I's glasses with water.
The rest of dinner went by fast. We ate and Hannah and Cameron chatted about their wedding plans. I walked Hannah through how the scrapbook was going.
Finally dinner was over and I stood in the kitchen rinsing all of our dishes. "So Hannah what did you think?" I said over my shoulder.
"I really loved it, it was all delicious." She held Cameron's hand. "What did you think Cam-bear?"
Cameron looked up at me like Jim from the Office. His eyes returned to Hannah and he smiled. "I think it was great." "It will be great for our wedding."
"I agree, this is what we'd like in six days."
Hannah stood up and walked to the door. "Well, I'm tired form all that good food, I think I'm going to head back up to the main house and call it a night." She waved and closed the door behind her.
I ran to Cameron while the locks clicked. I jumped up and he caught me. "Did you enjoy dinner?" I said smiling from ear to ear.
"I loved it." He set me down gently on my feet and kissed me softly on the lips. He held my hands and spun me around. "I was actually very impressed." "You never cook that well when it's just us two."
"Well, I also don't always have the access to all of those supplies every day." "But I promise that if we do get married after this, I will cook like that for you every night." I bit my lip and played with the collar of his shirt.
He pushed me back. "She's probably back at the house by now." "But I would love that." He winked.
