"Kate, wake up!" "It's the end of three days and I have a new deal." Hannah poked my arm.
"Owww, Hannah." I sat up and pushed my hair out of my face. "Is Cameron already in the main house?"
"Yes." "Now hurry up."
I stood up and walked over to the dining room table to see what she had to offer me today. I picked up the bottle of extra strength pain medicine. I set it back down and picked up the plastic bag. "What's in here?"
"Open it up and see." Hannah smiled.
I untied the knot keeping the bag closed. Inside was two bras with tags still on them. "Hannah?" "Are you serious?"
"One hundred percent." "I figured you were about a C."
I nodded. "Yeah, 34C." I looked at my thin frame. "Or at least I was three months ago."
"I grabbed 32C, I figured you were thinner than me." Hannah sat down in one of the chairs. "So do we have a deal?"
"Wait a minute." "What would you like in exchange?"
"I want one night with Cam and you can't talk to him for three days other than to tell him to leave you alone."
"So essentially the same as last time?"
"Basically." "What do you say, Kate?"
I set the bag back down on the table. I shrugged. "Sure why not, Hannah."
She tapped her fingers together. "Oh goodie." She stood up and walked towards the door. She opened it and stood in the doorway for a second. "I really enjoy working with you, Kate."
I nodded and turned the medicine bottle in my hand. I got up to find a clean glass.
Fifteen minutes later I sat on the couch writing in my journal and for the first time in a few weeks, I could sit on the couch without extreme pain. It still hurt and I had to reposition myself every few minutes but I could bear sitting long enough to finish a journal entry.
I mostly wrote about my family. I missed them a lot. I wrote a little about Cameron, but then I was trying to convince myself to let him go. I wrote about food a lot to. I really missed grilling. Grilled pineapple, burgers, grilled corn... I missed the smell of it to. I missed sweet tea, Hannah didn't stock the grocery store with tea bags.
I closed my journal a while later and set it back on the dresser. I walked over to the trash can in the kitchen and tossed my pen in. I'd have to remember to ask Hannah tomorrow if I could have another.
I sat in silence eating my dinner that night. I made myself chicken and rice. It made the whole house smell like garlic. It reminded me of home.
I set my fork down and pushed my plate across the table in front of me. I laid my head on my arms and just let the tears out. With some of my physical pain alleviated it created more space for emotional pain.
I cried for my mom, for my bed, for my baby sister, and for my readers. I just wanted to go home.
