I woke up the next morning with dried tears caked on my face. I pulled back the comforter and swung my legs over the side of the bed. I knew I had to start my day. I walked over to the closet. Hannah's dad had brought me clothes hangers last week, so my shirts were now hanging in the closet. I bent down and plucked a pair of shorts out of the cloth container on the floor.
I changed in the bathroom and stood in the mirror for a moment looking at my outfit. It was a sunshiny yellow circle skirt and a cyan tie dye tank top tucked into the skirt. It really flattered my figure, too bad no one was going to see it.
I smoothed my skirt and walked out to the kitchen. I pulled a yogurt drink out of the fridge. It was one of the few things I could bring myself to eat now. I checked the flavor. Coffee. My second favorite.
I sat at the dining room table drinking it. I looked out the window at the bright day. The heat created a haze over the desert.
I was just throwing away my drink bottle when I heard the locks clicked quickly. It sounded like there was a struggle on the other side of the door.
The door swung all the way in. Someone shoved Cameron in. I started running up to him but he held out his hands. "Stay back, Kate."
I stood back at the dining room table. Hannah's dad entered after Cameron. He had his hands up. Hannah entered after him with a knife pressed into his back. She shut the door and turned to me. She pointed the knife directly at me.
"Now listen here." "I don't know if you knew about my father's plot but you're going to cooperate with me." "The police are going to be here in an hour and you and Cameron are going to stay in the bedroom with the door locked and I will deal with my father." "Neither of you is going to make a sound if the police decide to poke around in here." "Clear?"
"Crystal." I said shakily.
She turned to her dad again. "Now come on." "I've got to get the house cleaned up for when they arrive."
She turned and opened the door. Hannah's dad walked out. She turned to Cameron. She pecked him on the cheek. "Now get in the bedroom." She turned to me and pointed the knife at me. "You to."
We walked into the bedroom. Hannah shut the door behind us and locked it. It locked with a key on both sides so without a key, neither of us was getting out.
I sat on the edge of the bed next to Cameron. I leaned and rested my head on his shoulder. "Well this definitely isn't how I pictured seeing you again."
"Yeah, this is pretty crazy." He took my hand and rested our hands on my thigh. "How are you doing?"
"Okay I guess." "It's been pretty hard, being alone." I turned my head to look up at him. "I've really missed you."
He turned to look down at me. His kissed me softly. "I've missed you too, beautiful." "I like your skirt."
I played with the hem with my free hand. "Thanks, love!" "I actually was a little upset this morning because I looked so cute and I thought no one was going to see."
"Well here I am." He smiled.
I rested my head on his shoulder. "So do you think this is the end?" "Are we finally getting out?"
"That's the result I'd like, but Hannah is pretty good at manipulating people." "The police may just believe what she tells them."
"Well, I hope for our sakes they don't."
