"Don't you realize Cameron?" "It's not ending!" I ran my fingers through my hair. "She's never going to stop doing this to me." "It's not like the clothes or the journal!" "She told me she wants to kill me!" I pointed at him. "You get to go that big house and what do I get Cam?" I screamed and doubled over. "Cameron Alexander Dallas, I love you but you cannot stand there and tell me you can do anything to change this."
"Kate, please." "Please." "I promise you, I'll make it better." "We're going to get out." Cameron tried to put his arms around me.
"Cam, I have at least three broken ribs, if you try to hug me I will personally end your life right now."
Cameron backed up. "Right, I'm sorry." "Kate, it kills me to see you in pain."
"No stop right there." "See what you said there." "You are not in any pain, you are fine." I lifted my shirt. "Me on the other hand?" I put it back down and pulled off my leggings to reveal a mixture of old and new bruises from my hip bones to my ankles. "I'm actually dying."
"Kate, don't do this." "We are in this together, we agreed on that." "Don't you remember?"
"Cameron." "I have been in this hellhole for nine and a half weeks."
"And I've been here with you." "I could have told Hannah that I wanted to stay in the main house." "You don't think she's offered?"
"Oh really you want to go there?" "I'm sure Hannah has a much comfier bed." "Why don't you go live with her?"
"Kate, listen to me." "I know that I can't possibly know what physical pain you are in, but you have to believe me when I say this." "It tears me up every day to have to leave the main house, where I don't get to do anything of my own free will, and come here to find the person I love bloody and bruised." He sat down on the couch. "Kate, I would die if I lost you." He held his face in his hands.
I sat down on the couch next to him. "Cam, I can't take it anymore." I choked on my tears. "Cameron, I love you but I need you to hate me." "I need to go." "I don't want to have to continue to live like this."
"Kate, please don't do this to me." "I couldn't hate you even if I tried." "Kate, I want to protect you so badly." "I feel like I have failed at my only job every time I come home and find you hurt again." "I can't lose you Kate."
"What am I supposed to do Cam?" "Be her punching bag for the next however long?" "What if one day she tips over the edge and kills me anyway?" "I'd rather die soon with the majority of my bones and organs intact than later when I am even more broken."
Cameron held my hands. "I can't lose you." "I couldn't imagine a life after this without you." "You are the only one on this planet who knows what it is like here." "The only one who will ever understand what I went through." "Kate." "I can't lose you."
I sat there and sobbed and sobbed until I eventually fell asleep laying on that couch.
"Look, Dad, I told you she'd come around." "I knew I could bend her." "Now I just have to push a little harder so she'll convince Cam to abandon her." Hannah grinned at the monitor. "This is so fun!"
"Hannah, don't you think you should take it a little easier on Kate?"
Hannah slid a knife out from under the desk in one fluid motion. She stood over her dad holding the blade to his throat. "I would watch what you say, or I'll make sure you won't survive this time." She smiled so wide her face looked like it might split in two. "Trust me, I don't need you anymore."
She shoved him and put the blade back under the desk. "Now go get me those things I asked for from the store."
