"Well I need her to live if we're going to build a solid case against their captor." "We... They need justice."

I turned my head towards the gruff voice. I slowly opened my eyes and winced as the pain kicked in. I saw a tall police officer standing at the foot of my hospital bed pointing accusingly at a nurse.

"She's going to live, her body's just in shock." "Honestly, I'm surprised she's doing as well as she is, she lost a quarter of her blood volume." The nurse glanced over at my monitors.

She gasped when she saw my eyes open.

I cracked a weak smile. I went to say something but realized I had a breathing tube in my mouth.

"See, she's alive." The nurse said proudly. "Now if you'll please leave so I can extubate her." She waved her hands to shoo the police officer.

He turned and walked out of the room.

"Hey, Kate." "We're going to get you all fixed up." She smiled and pulled on latex gloves. "You probably have a lot of questions."

I nodded slowly. I had more than a lot of questions.

I coughed as she pulled the end of the tube out of my mouth.

"There you go." "Your throat will be pretty sore for the rest of today and you'll be on clear liquids for at least two weeks, but I'm sure you'll do just fine." She smiled and placed the tube and her gloves in a medical waste bin.

"Where... Is... Cameron?" I croaked.

"He left last night to get some things from his house." "He said something about moving into an apartment he got nearby." She paused. "He's also been pretty busy with the trial." She smiled. "I'm sure he'll be back later today."

"What time." I gulped. My throat ached.

The nurse turned her wrist to look at her watch. "8:30 in the morning."

"How long." I took a deep breath.

"How long have you been out?"

I nodded.

"Two and a half weeks." "Your body went into pretty bad shock because you were underweight and lost so much blood." "You also were really low on vitamin D, which made it even harder for you to recover."

"Locked in shed." I sighed.

"Yeah, Cameron mentioned how you were kept inside most of the time." She patted my leg. "Get some rest, I'll have room service bring you some broth in a bit."

She left the room and I settled in my bed. I pulled the sheet back to reveal my stomach. I found a tube coming out of my stomach. I guess they had to feed me somehow.

I really hoped she was right and that Cameron would be back soon. There was so much I needed to know.

I laid there with my eyes closed. I wasn't sleeping, my brain wouldn't calm enough for that. Thoughts ran through my mind; where was my family, what was the trial, how was Cameron, what happened to Hannah.

Finally there was a soft knock at the door. The door swung open slowly and a man walked in. "Room service." He pulled my bed table in front of me and set a lunch tray with a bowl of broth on it.

The nurse walked in and walked over to my bed side. She held up a remote and pressed a button. The bed slowly raised until I was in a seated position. The nurse nodded at the room service guy and he left.

She lifted the cover off of the soup and sat down next to me on the bed. "Do you think you can feed yourself or do you need help?"

I took a deep breath and reached for the spoon. I tried desperately to grip the handle of the spoon, but I couldn't my hand was limp.

"That's ok, you haven't used your muscles in a while." The nurse took the spoon from my hand and ladled some broth into it. She held it in front of me. I opened my mouth and she fed me the broth.

I sat for fifteen minutes while she fed me the warm chicken broth. The warmth felt good, it was comforting. Above all else I felt a pressing feeling of fear. I didn't know what had happened in the past two and a half weeks and I didn't know what was going to happen now that I was awake.
