I sat in front of Nathan at a small wooden table in a Starbucks. I had a green tea in front of me and he had a regular cup of black coffee. We stared at each other for a while, not drinking or saying anything.

Finally, he sighed as he shifted in his seat. "I just want to say that I'm sorry for everything," he spoke up over the commotion in the building. I nodded my head slowly as I took a sip of my green tea and I gestured for him to go on, because he looked like he had a lot more to say. "And.. I regret everything."

"What do you regret specifically?" I asked him out of curiosity.

"Coming here in the first place. That's what I regret the most."

A pain settled into my chest and I swallowed a lump in my throat. "So, then you regret being friends then?"

"Yes, because I've only brought you more harm than good. And if I could reverse time to when we were kids, I would convince myself to hate you, so we could stop being friends," he lowered his voice and kept his gaze on his coffee. He didn't want to look me in the eyes, but I could hear the pain in his voice that showed that talking to me was taking a lot of his effort.

"Why do you say that?" I tried my best to keep my voice from trembling.

"I haven't been exactly honest with you.. it's about my father. And yours too," he told me as he took his shaky hand and grabbed his cup to take a few sips from it. "Our fathers were actually involved with Mr. Winchester. In fact, there's actually no mystery in why he's been targeting you, and me as well. Your father and mine had been working together under Mr. Winchester and they were best buds. But, your father actually took off with some of Mr. Winchester's money and my dad stayed and he wouldn't say a word about it. Ultimately, that's what their downfall was.

"After another few years of dealing with Mr. Winchester's torture, my dad up and left. With it being a smaller city, less population, everyone knew and everyone talked. They didn't know the details, but they knew that my dad had left and he was gone for good. Mr. Winchester drove my dad insane. He was pissed about his stolen money, but it's not like your dad did it to be thief on purpose. He was desperate. You were gonna be born and your family was going through a financial crisis, and you guys are still barely recovering. That's why your mom had loan sharks after her."

I couldn't believe a word he was telling me. I blinked a couple of times to get water back into my eyes as they were dry from being wide open the entire time. "So, how'd you know all this?" I asked, swallowing nervously.

He leaned in closer to me over the table. "My dad had left letters for me while growing up. In those letters, he told me all about this and more about Mr. Winchester at that time. Listen, I'll do whatever I can to help you take down Mr. Winchester. I might not be able to get my dad back but some revenge will allow me some closure. Kimberly, I'll be gone for a little bit. Maybe two months at the most?"

"Where will you be going?"

"That's a secret I must keep from you if you really want my help. I'll tell you everything if I get back," he told me, as I watched him drink the last bit of his coffee that he had left. I swirled the straw around in the cup with my fingers and I stirred the liquid along with the ice cubes.

"So you can't tell me anything right now? How can I know that I can trust you after everything that's been happening?" I asked him, crossing my arms and staring at him, waiting for a response from him. A subtle look of hurt washed over his face for a split second before it went away and his straight face came back.

"I have feelings too, okay? For the longest time I've loved you more than a best friend, and to watch you go off with someone else and not return the same feelings back to me, but at the same time making me feel like we could've had something, it really put a toll on me. But in the end, you're still my best friend and I love you to death because you're the amazing Kimberly that I've known for a very long time. I don't deserve your trust and I won't ask for it, but just know that I'll be gone and I'll tell you everything later. Deal?"

"Deal," I whispered, pursing my lips together and holding back my tears. They were on the verge of spilling, but I did good on not letting my tears fall. I gave Nathan a smile as I nodded my head, and I grabbed his hand and I held it. "I love you, too." My love for Nathan was unconditional. His love for me might still be more than a friend, but my love for him was nothing but a best friend. A comrade. A companion. Having him there with me made me feel like we could be best friends until the day we die.

"Well, let's get going, yeah?" He suggested as he slowly stood to his feet, stretching his back, legs and arms out. I sighed as I leaned my back even further into the seat.

"You go ahead. I'm just going to stay here for a little while longer, catch up on some alone time," I responded and he just nodded his head in understanding.

"Okay then," he said as he pressed his hands against his pockets to make sure he had everything in them. "I'll see you later," he added with a smile and a wave before heading toward the door.

"See you," I said to him with a wave and I watched him walk out and to his car. "I hope," I mumbled the last part as I watched him drive away.
