Food and Fire

I officially have a phobia of monkey’s. And, to top it all off, I still have no food. This day was not turning out to be very productive.
And I was full of blood. Marisa probably heard me scream but didn’t think to come over here. That jerk.
My stomach rumbled. Food. I needed food. But right now, I really needed to sit down and get my body to stop shaking with fear of monkeys.
So I just sat down, right in the middle of the jungle. I sat down for about thirty seconds before I heard the first twig snap. I immediately shot up. “Monkey?” I said, fear dripping in my voice.
“What?” A familiar voice said. “Monkey?”
“Oh, it’s just you,” I said to Liam as he came through the trees. “What’s up?”
“Blood..” Liam said, eyeing me, “In your case. What happened?”
“Oh, I got attacked my a monkey. Evil little child.” I said, and Liam laughed.
“I heard you screaming,” he said, “So I came over to make sure that everything was okay.”
“Well if you came over like ten minutes ago you might have been able to help, but it’s a little late now.” I said sarcastically.
“So I take it that you didn’t find any food then?”
“I found a berry bush but I’m not sure if they’re safe to eat,” I answered, “Did you find any plant things?”
“Yeah I found this flower that I think will help Harry a lot. Let’s check out that berry bush. Do you remember where it is?”
“Yea,” I said, walking in the direction of the bush. Liam followed me in silence.
“So how did you manage to get to the island after the plane crashed?” He asked.
    “I swam.” I said.
“That’s obvious,” he laughed, “But how did you get there so much before us?”
    “Well you guys took FOREVER.”
“Well we were looking for you.”
“Oh.” I paused, “I guess that I didn’t really think about that.”
We stopped at the bush. I glanced at Liam, “Are they safe to eat?”
He picked one off the bush and studied it closely, “Yea, they are. We can take some back to camp. But I don’t think they’ll last long.”
“Yea, well whatever, at least it’s something.” I said.
We began to walk back to camp. Liam lead the way because I was totally lost. I wondered how I would have been able to get back by myself.
I probably would have just died in the jungle.
Somewhere in the back of my head, a voice nagged me that I still just might.

When the sun went down, we were all huddling close together for warmth. Being at a island and such, we didn’t think about needing warmth. But we did.
Liam was pretty hot, though. Literally. I rested my head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around me. I felt safe in his arms.
“We need t-to figure out h-how to m-make a f-fire!” Kayla said as her teeth chattered.
Just then, the sky rumbled and rain started pouring down on us. We had no shelter what so ever.
    “Great,” Liam whispered, sighing.
“OW!” Harry screamed as the rain hit his skin.
“Awwwww,” Kayla said, pouting. “Take my jacket!” She gave him her blue jacket and he covered himself with it. “Thanks.” Then they kissed, again.
Liam looked really cute in the rain. But I couldn’t focus on that. We needed shelter.
“Hey, maybe if lightning starts it can start our fire,” Kayla said, smiling.
“Yeah, if it didn’t KILL US!” I told her.
“That’s a good idea,” Harry said. “We could make a huge pile of wood and then wait for lightning!”
“Okay, you guys think about that while we go gather some wood,” Liam says.
    “OKAY!” Kayla said, smiling again.
Liam and I rolled our eyes, and smiling as well, headed into the jungle. The rain wasn’t as bad with cover from the trees, and it actually looked pretty in the rain.
“Where are we going to find wood?” I ask Liam.
He laughed. “I don’t know, I was just doing Harry a favor so he could have some ‘alone time’ with Kayla.”
    “Oh,” I said, laughing. “Okay.”
“But, I guess we should try.” He stands in front of an old tree and grabs some loose pieces of bark from the trunk. “This should work okay.”
I nod just as the flashes of lightning start.
“Hey,” Liam says to me, smiling, “I wonder if they have a fire started!”
“Totally!” I laughed back. “Okay, let’s go.”
When we stepped out of the jungle and into our camp, orange, red, and yellow fill our vision.

It didn’t really go quite as planned. It started out good, with lots of kissing and piling wood, but then the lighting struck.
Hadn’t we had enough fire for like ten lifetimes? As the lightning hit the wood I screamed in delight, “Ha! The plan worked!”
Harry pulled me in a for kiss and it lasted for about forty seconds before the heat began to feel a little too intense and we pulled away. “Oh my holy shit!” I screamed.
Harry’s eyes widened. Out of all of us, he had the worst experiences with fire. He seemed frozen in spot, unable to move from the out of control burning flames. “Run!” I screamed at him.
He didn’t budge. I finally grabbed his arm and pulled, pulling him out of his trance. We began to run away from the flames just as Liam and Marisa appeared from the jungle. “Kayla! What did you do?”
“THERE’S A FIRE! WE NEED TO RUN.”
“NO REALLY!?” Liam screamed at me. Okay, that was a little mean.
Harry still seemed to be half in a trance. I pulled him along, away from the flames and Liam helped me with him when he got closer. “WE HAVE TO STOP IT!” Marisa screamed. I noticed the rain had stopped.
    “How?” I said, running.
    “I don’t know!”
It was catching up to us. Quickly. I swore. “GO TO THE WATER!” I yelled.
We changed our direction to the water. As it hit us Harry screamed in agony. “I’m sorry, Harry! Keep running!”
Liam and I were practically carrying Harry now, trying to keep the water off of him. “I have an idea.” I said.
“Uh-oh.” Marisa and Liam said at once.
    “No it’s a good one..I think.”
“Alright let’s try it.” Liam said.
Harry made a mumbling sound. “What?” I asked him.
He mumbled again. Oh, well. It was really too bad that I didn’t really have an idea.
“How about...okay. Umm...yeah that might work. I’ll be right back!!”
“Where are you going!? There’s no where to go!” Marisa said, panic in her voice.
“I’ll be back in like five minutes!” I screamed as I sprinted toward the jungle.
Tree, tree, tree, tree, tree. I thought, looking at burning tree after burning tree. Fire, fire, fire, fire, fire. Hey, there’s one that doesn’t look too bad.
I climbed it as fast as I could to the very top.
It was starting to feel very hot. Just keep climbing, I thought. Think happy thoughts. Harry. One Direction. Stephen Jerzak. 1D, 1D, 1D. Cheer. Harry. Harry. Harry.
That was better. I got near the top and hugged the top. I wanted to see how far the fire had spread to see if we could stop it.
But not that I was at the top, I realized it wasn’t really working out. The flames were licking at the bottom of the tree and it began to wobble.
“CRAP!!!!” I screamed as it swayed.
I wrapped my body around it and screamed, “WWWWHHHAAAAA!” As it tilted sideways. “TIMBER!”
