So, they were going to test on our brains to see if their little soldier babies would rebel once they were teens? Strange. And painful, probably.
“The testing will start in about twenty minutes,” Dester said the next morning, after we slept for a while. I guess they wanted our brains to be all rested up before they, you know, tested on it. We had slept in a small room with cameras all around it...very comfy. When we woke up, Dester took us to a room and gave us a big continental breakfast, which I didn’t mind. I hadn’t had a meal like that in a while. We were served Belgian waffles, my favorite, pancakes, sausages, bacon, orange juice, and some fruit.
“God, I’m stuffed,” Harry said, sitting back in his chair.
“Good,” Quad said, walking over to us. “The testing is about to begin.”
He led us to a huge room with four other science looking people in lab coats. I felt a lot like Maximum Ride, ya know, without the wings.
Liam stood next to me and squeezed my hand, and I smiled at him.
The room had seats hooked up to some weird looking machines, a giant board with numbers going up and down and making beeping noises.
“Okay, Marisa sit here, Kayla here, Harry here and Liam here,” Quad said, pointing to each of the chairs. “These scientists are gonna hook you up to the machines, which will read your brain. Oh, and if you try to resist, we have many other torture devices available.”
“That’s reassuring,” Kayla grumbled, sitting down next to her scientist.
I sat down on the cold metal chair and looked up at my scientist. It was a middle-aged man with a little beard.
“So, is this going to, like, hurt?” Liam asked, sitting down.
“Maybe a little bit,” One of the guys said.
My eyebrows raised and my pulse got rapid as my scientist put this giant machine on my head that probably weighed more than my head. “A little bit” In their mind probably meant a little.
I looked at Kayla, who was looking at Harry and seemed a little worried, and Harry was looking back at her, being reassuring. Awwwg. Then there was Liam, who was looking at me, giving me a smile.
I smiled back at him and tried not to freak out as they pushed start on the machine.
It wasn’t really even that bad. Well...kind of.
Imagine like a really, really, REALLY bad migraine that lasts for like two minutes. Well that’s what it was. Marisa screamed as the pain kicked in and began to thrash around, screaming her head off, but we had handcuffs connecting our wrists to the chair so she couldn’t do anything but scream and squirm.
Liam looked like he wanted to do something, but he, like the rest of us, was in pain too. He was biting his lip, trying not to scream.
Harry was sitting there too, mouth formed in a perfect O as if he was shocked that a head could even feel so much bad stuff. I sat there, trying not to yell but I gave up after a while and just let my screams come out, which I could tell amused Jean, Dester and Quad.
After a while the pain ended and my screams slowly faded away, leaving me gasping. Marisa had tears running down her cheeks and her face was red. Liam began to cough uncontrollably, and I wondered if he had even been breathing. Harry was extremely pale.
“That was horribleeeee,” Liam moaned.
“Yeah, well,” Quad said. “Anyways, we have your brain scans...but now we need to put a chip in your brains so that we can read your thoughts.”
“Pardon moi?” I asked.
“Kayla, chill out. It’s perfectly safe,” Jean said.
“Really? Is it really?” Marisa asked.
“Yeah. Sorta. So, who wants to go first?”
No response.
“I will,” Liam said groaning.
They took Liam back into a room. He didn’t come back, but Jean assured us he was fine and was just in recovery. Marisa, surprisingly, asked to go next, so she did. Then I went.
They took me back to a room that was lit brightly with lot’s of scary sharp things. “Lay down...” A scientist commanded.
I laid down, and they began to place a mask over my mouth and nose. Everything began to tingle, and I began to see dots. And then...well, I don’t really remember.
The next thing that I knew I was waking up and Harry was next to me. “Okay, you guys are done. Get up.”
I stood up and was happy to figure out that my head did not hurt too bad. Then Jean began to laugh.
“What?” I asked.
Liam was sitting on a chair with Marisa, and Harry and I were on a couch. I don’t know how we got there.
“BHAHAHAHAAH!! HARRY YOU WEIRD KID!” Jean screamed, doubling over.
Harry reddened. Oh, yeah, they could read our minds. “What’s he thinking?” I asked.
“I’ll show you,” Jean said.
Four screens appeared in front of us. Each had one of our names. All of them were black, but Marisa’s.
Marisa’s was pretty typical for Marisa. Bold words flashes across her screen. HORSES, HORSES, COOKIES, COOKIES, LIAM, LIAM, LEEEEEYY-UMMM. OH MI GOD THIS IS EMBARRASING. OH MY GOD! MARISA STOP THINKING!!! AGGGGGHHH! HEY, LOOK SOMETHING SHINY.
I began to laugh and then Marisa’s turned off and Liam’s came on. I wonder what my screen is gonna say. Oh, that. Woahhh. Spoons. Spoons. Thinking check. I like Marisa in jeans. OH MY CRAP! Marisa, I’m sorry. I like you in everything. I’m so so so so sorry. Oh, gosh. I’m a bad person. Marisa, I love you. Sorry. This is so cool. Whhhhooosssh!
Marisa began to blush and I winked at her.
Then Harry’s came on. Why is Jean’s hair so red? It’s like a fire. A blazing stupid fire. I hate him. I looked over at Harry and laughed. I wonder why Liam likes Marisa is jeans. Girls look so much hotter in yoga pants. I love Kayla in yoga pants. Damnit, Jean can read this. F** you Jean!
Jean shot a look at Harry and Harry just shrugged.
Then mine came on: I see you walk by extra fly baby where you going where you at? SAY SOMETHING! if you’re feeling the vibe!
I laughed. I was always thinking about that song. Silly me.
Harry’s hair is hot.
Harry smiled at me.
“Okay,” Jean said, “Well now we can read what you are thinking in different situations so now we have to test to see what you guys are like when you are torn apart emotionally. So...let’s go.”
