Chapter 2: 1:30 AM, Naperville IL, THE PARK
“Did you see that?” Kayla whispered. Her voice sounded scared. She stopped swinging, and suddenly I shivered. I hadn’t seen anyone, but I hated being out in the dark.
“Let’s go,” I said. I looked around, and jumped whenever i thought I saw something moving.
Kayla nodded and I followed her out of the park.
I heard crunching on the mulch, but realized we were both already on the cement. “Someone’s behind us,” I whispered. My heart started pounding. Stuff like this only happened in movies, right?
“Don’t run,” I said.
“WHHHHHHHAAAAAHHHH!” Kayla flared her arms up and started sprinting for her life. She was already about 20 feet ahead of me.
I didn’t really see any other option but to run after her-but I wasn’t as fast. Kayla started to run left of the elementary school.
“Go in the school!” I shouted. I didn’t hear anything behind me, but there was no way I would turn around. Kayla seemed to hear me, and turned and started slamming on one of the school’s door.
I finally caught up to her- and then I did hear something behind me. I felt like fainting.
Kayla swore under her breath. “It’s locked!”
“Try this one!” I ran to the next door. No luck there. My mind started going into defensive mode. I turned around, but all I saw was Kayla having a spasm. There was no one following us?
I was really impressed when Kayla pulled open one of the windows. “Come on!” She shouted to me. I had more luck getting through the window- i was small for our grade.
Once we were both inside, i didnt feel any calmer. The classroom we were in was pitch black, and all of the desks were stacked since it was summer.
Kayla and I were both panting harder than any dog. I felt tears in my eyes- then heard a banging.
The banging was louder. I turned, slowly, and saw a dark figure banging it’s fist on the window. It gave up, took out something that looked like a crow-bar, and broke the glass. Me and Marisa screamed and fell to the ground.
“Get up!” She screamed. I did, and we began sprinting down the hallway.
SSSHHH! I swallowed the terror as I heard the sound of a SNIPER being fired...at us! Marisa did the same, and we turned a corner, determined to get away from the bullets and get out of here.
“There!” I whispered, and we ran up the stairs that were so familiar from our fifth grade year. “Let’s go to Ms. Correll’s class.” Marisa suggested, and we began to run in that direction.
It looked the same as it had when we were younger, but the desk’s were stacked...and something was moving. “Oh crap.” Marisa said, surprising me, because she hardly swore.
A soft RAAAWWWRRR ran through the air and I covered my mouth to stop from screaming. “It’s just the turtle.” Marisa said.
Oh, yea. Our old teacher kept a class pet, an old turtle named Roxy. “Behind the desks,” I said and we crouched.
“Call 911!” Marisa shouted softly, panic rising in her voice.
I just stared at her, “I don’t get signal at the school.”
Marisa brushed a single tear away from her face, “I left mine at your house because it was dead.”
We were on our own.
