I stared out the window at the police cars and the ambulance parked near the reck. I felt a horrible feeling deep in my gut...I couldn’t imagine how Harry felt...and maybe Liam and I had been too hard on him. But what was he thinking? I was just glad that for the time being no one was dead.
Liam and I were sitting on the couch, staring at Kayla. Harry was down in the cafeteria, claiming that he was getting food, but I knew he just wanted to get away from us. And get away from seeing Kayla like this.
Liam kissed me two times before looking up at me with his brown eyes. “Marisa? Honestly...are you okay?”
I bit my bottom lip. “I think I am, but I just can’t wrap my head around this. I just want to get Kayla to feel better and head home. With you, of course.”
Liam smiled and nodded. “I feel the same way.”
“What about your family?” I said suddenly. “They must be extremely worried.”
“We only have parents, no other siblings. And they know we’re going to be okay.” He had a genuine look on his face.
“How?”
“They just know.” Liam kissed me once more.
When we woke up, Kayla wasn’t there. A nurse had left a note that said she would be waking up soon and she was taking off the gauze and doing a check up. Harry was snuggled in the corner, looking pretty upset.
“Let’s go get food before Kayla comes back,” Liam said. We all agreed. We ate our food- mine consisted of a luke warm bowl of processed chicken noodle soup and a small cookie that was hard and I felt disappointed. I couldn’t stop shaking my foot- I really wanted to see Kayla.
Finally, we headed back up to the room. There was the doctor and two other nurses, around a open eyed Kayla. The doctor and nurses left, giving us some privacy.
I held back a sob and ran into hug to her. She felt cold and almost...lifeless.
“You are hurting me,” She groaned.
“Oh my gosh, sorry,” I said. Liam was smiling like crazy and patted Kayla on the only part of her body that seemed in-tact- her head. Harry stared at her for a few minutes, then he slowly walked towards her and they kissed for about 20 seconds. It was so romantic I wanted to cry.
Kayla’s scratches were actually looking much better. They weren’t in gauze, and she was wearing a hospital gown that I could tell she didn’t approve of. The whip marks were long and I cringed as I looked at them, but I was so happy to see her that it only lasted a second.
Suddenly, Kayla punched Harry in his arm- hard. I know it was hard from experience.
“What was that for?” Harry said a little whiney, obviously not expecting it.
“What do you think it was for, dumb ass?” Kayla looked pretty mad.
“Oh- you know?” Harry said, raising his eyebrow. “How?”
“I could hear you guys,” Kayla said. “You’re so lucky I couldn’t move.”
Harry smirked a little but tried to keep a serious face.
“So how much longer does she have to stay here?” Liam said to the doctor, who just entered the room.
“Probably just overnight,” He said. “But she needs time to heal. Don’t do anything crazy.”
Yeah, like fight pirates and get sold as slaves and get a bookshelf on yourself and get kidnapped to Paris? That was going to happen.
The doctor left soon after I woke up. Liam and Marisa left too, after a while, to go take a walk.
I was sitting up in my bed, Harry facing me. “Are you ever going to tell me what happened that night between you and Devin?” He asked.
I flinched, sending pain shooting up my body. Thinking about Devin meant thinking about the pain, and thinking about the pain was just too much. Plus, I wasn’t sure that I knew exactly what Harry would do when he found out. “Not right now.” I said, “It’s not like you deserve to know, after what you did.”
He sighed, “I’m sorry.”
“You better be,” I teased. He leaned down and kissed me, sending shivers and lightning up my spine. “What’s going to happen after this?” I asked.
“I guess we’ll go home. Liam and I can live in the hotel like we planned. Then again, we thought that was gonna happen last time and it never did.”
I grinned, “True. Last time we ended up crashing a plane and fighting pirates.”
“I’d do it all again, if it meant I’d get to meet you.”
He kissed me again, and I ignored the pain and reached up to grab his neck with my one hand that wasn’t in a sling. He was warm against my cold body and I realized how good it felt to have him holding me again.
“Everything? Even the burns from the plane?”
“Everything,” He whispered.
I smiled. “You scared me to death you know.”
Harry flinched. “Not funny, I don’t like that word associated with anymore,” he said. “Not that I ever did.” He put one hand on my face so gently that I barley felt his touch. I leaned into him.
“No, really,” I protested. “Don’t even think about pulling something like that again.”
He nodded, smiling, “I promise I never will. I have a really good reason to live now.”
I shook my head, laughing. “Whatever,” I teased and kissed him on the cheek.
Harry’s face suddenly lit up, like he was surprised by something. He stared at me, mouth slightly open, like he wasn’t quite believing it. “What?” I asked, confused.
“I can’t believe I didn’t realize it before,” he said, looking at me.
He laughed, a sound that in my opinion was the best sound in the world. “What?” I repeated again, shoving him lightly.
“I love you.” He said the words slowly, as if registering them. “I love you. I love you!”
I sucked in a little bit of air, smiling from ear to ear. Those three little words coming out of Harry’s mouth were so sweet, sounded so good on his lips, that I wanted him to just keep saying it over and over again so that I could keep hearing it, keep knowing that it was true, that he loved me. “You know what? I love you too.”
We both started laughing then, so much that it hurt my stomach and cheek cuts. “I love you!” Harry repeated.
Then he ran to the the window, opened it, stood half-way out and screamed, “I’m in love with Kayla Thomas!”
I laughed so hard that I was toppled over, clutching my stomach. He ran back to my bed, “I am so in love with you.”
“I am so in love you too,” and then I kissed him again.
Liam and I walked down the hallway, holding each others hand. My whole body tingled when I thought about going back home- with Liam.
“What are you smiling about?” Liam said, grinning as well.
“You,” I said, kissing him on the lips.
Suddenly, I heard a loud beeping noise come from a machine nearby. Everyone started pacing around and running downstairs.
“What’s going on?” I asked to nobody, but a doctor heard me.
“Oh nothing to worry about. Just go back to your rooms, and stay there please.”
Liam’s hand felt cold all of a sudden, and we both knew something was really wrong. We ran back down the hallway and burst into Kayla’s room.
“What?” Kayla said. I knew I had just walked into yet another awkward situation.
“They told us to stay in our rooms. Something’s wrong,” Liam said. He looked out the window.
He fell silent and his body froze.
“What? What is it?” I said, running over to him.
I looked down at four familiar faces.
“Run!” Liam said, grabbing me. Harry tried to help Kayla- who was now wearing a t-shirt and jeans- out of the bed and she screamed. “What is going on????”
We ran down the hallway, slamming into a few nurses running in the opposite direction.
“This way!” Liam said, guiding us through a narrow passageway and up a flight of stairs.
“Ow!” Kayla said, still screaming.
“Sh!” I said. I knew the guys could be close by.
We ended up on another level, this one completely empty. Too empty. The only thing I could hear was Kayla groaning and our heavy breathing. The air felt cold.
“Hide,” Harry whispered. We crouched down behind a table, but not before they appeared at the other end of the hallway.
Standing there, in cuts, bruises, and a prison outfit, was Jean, Gage, Kerg, and...Devin.
Kayla made a very strange noise from her throat. I was pinching myself so much that Liam had to grab my arm. I couldn’t believe this. How could this be happening- AGAIN? I was really mad. And scared. They must have escaped jail- so where were the cops?
“Hi, long time no see,” Devin said. He had the same creepy smile, and I think he was actually enjoying this. I couldn’t even look at the others.
I started to grab the others to keep running, but Liam stood up.
“No,” I whispered. “No, no, no, no.”
So did Harry.
“Get away from us,” Harry said. He looked so strong and ferocious that I shivered.
“What makes you think we are going to do that?” Jean said.
“That’s what makes you beautiful,” Kayla murmured.
“Not the time,” I said.
Gage grabbed a IV pouch hanging nearby and ripped out the needle. Blood spurted everywhere on the ground, and I almost puked. He charged right at Liam, but he was ready and had better reflexes. He dodged out of the way and pulled his ankles, which made him flip to the ground. The needle ended up landing sharp side up and went right into Gage’s arm.
The guy let out a horrible scream, but got back up. I looked over to my left to see Harry and Devin fighting. I had never seen two guys look more mad and determined in my life.
Harry threw punch after punch, and Devin dodged the first one but got hit in the eye by the second. I realized Kayla and I were just crouching there and that Kerg was thinking about killing us so I grabbed Kayla and ran. I felt like such a wimp, but I knew Kayla couldn’t fight. I led her up more stairs and heard rapid footsteps behind us, but they stopped by Liam. I silently thanked him.
We went up another flight and entered a small room. Kayla sat down on the bed, panting.
“What are we going to do?” She said.
“You’re going to stay right here,” I said, closing the room and running back to the battle, Kayla’s screaming behind me.
