Dinner was different. Martin had work or something to do so it was just me, Devin, and Liam. Liam was sweaty and looked ready to fall asleep, but he made an effort to make conversation.
“So, what did you guys do today?”
I blushed. Devin said, “We went to the lake. I kissed Kayla.”
Liam coughed on some of his water. “You what?”
“I kissed Kayla.” He repeated.
Liam shot me a look and mouthed “Harry?”
Aloud, I said, “I know! He doesn’t need to know...”
“Yes he does!”
“I didn’t kiss him he kissed me.” I said simply, looking at Devin so that he could confirm it.
“It’s true,” Devin added, “She just lied there.”
Liam shrugged and went back to eating his food. We ate the rest of the food in silence and when we were done, Liam stood and said, “I’m gonna get some sleep. You coming Kayla?”
Devin answered for me, “No, me and Kayla are gonna talk for a little bit.”
I turned to Liam, “Apparently me and Devin are going to talk for a little bit.”
Liam smiled and walked out of the room. “So.” Devin said, “You wanna come to my room?”
“Not really.”
“C’mon... I don’t wanna have to make you.”
“Fine,” I muttered, standing up and walked up the steps to his room. He followed me and sat on his bed when we arrived. I stayed by the door.
Then he grabbed me. It was really fast, and I wasn’t expecting it so I couldn’t stop him from swinging me onto his bed and kissing me, hard.
At first I did what I did at the lake and just let him do what he wanted. But then he got a little...wild up. “Stop,” I said as he reached for my shorts. I pushed away.
“Whyyyy?” He purred.
“Because!” I screeched and jumped off of his bed. He grabbed me around the waist, and I realized just how strong he was. “I don’t think so.”
I untangled myself from him, ran out of the door, and sprinted down the stairs. I heard him running after me but didn’t stop running, out of the house, and outside.
He was faster than me. He tackled me again and kissed my neck, despite my squirming, “It’ll be easier if you just calm down.”
“You’re insane!” I screamed, trying to get up.
I couldn’t get up. “LIAM!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. “LIAMMMMMM!!!”
I heard footsteps a while away. “Kayla?”
“HELP ME!” I screamed.
“Kayla!” Devin hissed.
I tried to get up again but he pinned me to the ground. I screamed.
Then he was off of me. I quickly shot up to see Liam punching Devin in the neck. I stepped away, breathing hard.
Devin pulled away and kicked Liam in the stomach. He grunted and fell to the ground. I screamed again as Liam got up and punched Devin in the nose so hard blood came bursting out.
I heard another air of footsteps running. I saw Martin come closer, sprinting and yelling, “STOP!”
The boys pulled apart, both breathing heavily. Martin ran up to Devin, “Whose fault is this?”
I realized that Martin had a long, thin, brown rope in his hand. I waited for him to say Liam and for Martin to hit him a few more times and then for me and Liam to go back to the little barn.
But Devin pointed right at me and said, “Her.”
Suddenly I was on the ground. I could hear Liam faintly screaming, but my head hit the ground hard and the world was spinning.
I saw Devin standing over me. He rose the rope and swung at my cheek, and I felt unbearable pain spread across my face. I tried to scream but I couldn’t find my voice.
Another hit, this one to my stomach, that was bear since Devin had tried to take off my tank-top but failed and just ended up revealing my stomach. I couldn’t breathe. I felt like I was choking on my own tongue.
I could still hear Liam screaming. But then the world faded away and darkness took its place.
We ran for about half an hour before my ankle was killing like crazy and we were both completely exhausted. We didn’t know when the woman stopped chasing us, but she did. Probably to go home and call the cops. I wondered if Austin would know it was us.
As we crouched down to catch our breath, I tried to clear my focus and figure out where we were.
We seemed to be on a small cobblestone stone street filled with small shops- most that seemed abandoned or very unpopular- and there were only a couple people walking down the streets. As we ran, pretty much no one looked at us, like two running kids being chased by a woman with a bat was the most normal thing ever. That wasn’t hard to believe, considering how messed up this island was.
“Did you get the stuff?” Harry asked me, still winded.
My head got less dizzy and I looked down at my arms. Somehow, I had managed to grab the one box of cookies and almost all of the clothes were still there.
“Thank goodness,” I said. I opened the box and inhaled a cookie in my mouth.
Okay, now Harry looked at me like he was SURE I was the craziest girl in the world.
“Let’s change and try to figure out where we are and such.”
We ventured into a small shop that was selling paintings and other home decor items. There was only three customers and we walked over to the short, fat, lady behind the counter.
“Hello,” She said in a British voice.
Harry smiled. “Hello,” He said in the same, but cuter, British voice.
“What may I help you with?” She said. She obviously was please with Harry.
“Do you have a toilet room?”
The lady smiled again. “Of course. It’s around that corner.” She pointed to a hallway to the left.
“Thank you,” I chimed in, feeling left out.
I changed first: a long, ugly, flower dress, a light blue cotton sweater, and a pearl necklace. I put on high heels and tried to comb through my hair with my fingers. When I was done, I at least looked like a short 30 year old with very bad fashion. I wandered around the room, looking at the items, while Harry changed. When he finally came out, he looked like an old fashion guy.
We both smiled as the lady waved to us, not realizing who we were.
“Good, so we look different,” I whispered to him.
Harry nodded and turned to the lady. “Excuse me, ma’am,” He said in a lower, slower voice than usual. “Do you know where the auctions are held?”
“Yes, right down the street, actually!” She said.
“Thanks.”
We left the shop, wobbled down the street in our high shoes, and stopped in front of a building that said: AUCTIONS.
A bell rang as we entered the shop. We both coughed as the loads of dust and rust filled our mouths and noses.
“Good morning,” A familiar face said. I silently gasped when I realized it was the man from the auction.
I looked out the window and realized it was light outside. We had to have been running all night- so probably more than 30 minutes.
“Hello, we have a bit of a predicament at our hands,” Harry said, politely.
“And what may that be?”
“We came into town, hearing from a friend about Liam Derain and Kayla Thomas- two highly priced, good, kids- being sold. Do you happen to know where they are?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, they were already sold,” The man said, pursing his lips. “May I interest you in any other auctions? We are having another today.”
“No,” Harry said, looking down with a fake sad look on his face. He had a plan. “My wife and I were really looking forward to buying those kids. We were going to pay loads of money. 10,000 dollars, in fact.”
The man chocked on his glass of water. “Oh, please! Let me get my record book, I’ll tell you where they are.”
Harry gave me a sly grin.
