ZOE'S POV
I welcomed them in, much to my dismay, they had brought bags for a couple of days. Why wouldn't they tell me they were coming? What if Evan and I had something planned? What if one of us had a business trip?
Luckily we didn't. I tried to force my anger away with a fake smile still plastered on my lips. I casually asked
"So, what are you guys doing here"?
"Well, because you and Evan are so busy with work that you can't come visit, we decided it would be better for us to visit you for a change. We miss our daughter, Zoe. Also, it's going to be so nice to spend some time with our only grandchild". My mother said
I did feel a little guilty that we hadn't been up for Oakley's sake. He hasn't seen his grandparents in a while. Heidi, Evan's mother comes down when she can. She doesn't just drop in unannounced and expect us to be okay with it. Heidi knows how difficult it can be to make plans around work.
"So, how has our little girl been"? Dad asked me
I felt a small smile tugging at my lips. It's always nice when Dad would call me that. It almost makes me forget about how bad my relationship was with my parents. They would always focus more on Connor and it's like I didn't exist, but you could hear them running if they needed something from me, I forgot to do the dishes because I had homework or I let a grade slip.
"I've been good. Evan and I have been thinking about putting Oakley in some sort of preschool".
"Already? Isn't he only 3"? Mom questioned
"Yes, they have great classes for toddlers at the local school. It's better than having a pay a babysitter or having Heidi watch him when Evan and I are at work. Also, Oakley isn't around other kids his age". I explained
"Does he struggle with being around other kids his age"? Dad asked
"Not in an aggressive way. He's showing signs of a possible anxiety disorder. Evan knows the signs and has filled me in on them. We think if he gets used to other kids before he goes to Kindergarten in a few years, maybe he'll be better off".
My parents for once seemed to agree with me.
"I remember putting Connor in kindergarten for the first time. That was obviously before he struggled with drugs". Mom said flatly
Of course bringing Connor into the conversation. Connor and I have a great relationship now but that doesn't take away the fact my parents can't seem to remember they have two children.
I still had all that paperwork that needed to get done by tonight so I knew I couldn't chat long. I better call Evan and let him know my parents are staying a couple days.
"Zoe, did we interrupt something"? My mother asked
Really? She's concerned about that now? Why didn't that thought cross her mind before she even left the house. However, I was still clinging onto the want for this to stay civil.
"I was just working". I said letting a smile cross my lips
"From home"? Dad questioned
"Yeah, I have a bunch of paperwork that needs to be done tonight. I couldn't finish them at work today. I had to come home because Evan had to work and I didn't have anyone to watch Oakley". I said pretending that I wasn't completely annoyed with the sudden visit.
"Well we'll watch him for a few hours. You finish what you need to, Zo". Mom smiled
A small feeling of relief and appreciation fell though my body. I gave a nod and headed back to my office.
