The boy's body was eventually carried off into an ambulance with two young paramedics waiting. Although the child was unconscious, he was being treated with oddly careful movements.
If something else were to happen to the boy's head after experiencing such a hard blow to the skull... it may cause permanent brain damage or even death. Zoe sat on the front steps, holding herself in her arms. Tears streamed from her eyes down her face.
Evan cupped her face in his hands, trying to gather her before they followed behind the ambulance to the hospital. Zoe kept talking about how she could've been a better Mom. She kept saying it was her fault for not locking the sliding door.
"Babe.. shhh, it's not your fault". Evan calmly told her as he too couldn't help be think what he could've done to prevent this.
The comforting words were just bouncing off from Zoe like a tennis ball on a wall. She refused to accept anything that didn't say she was to blame. One of the paramedics informed them of there planned departure in 5 minutes.
"Would one of you like to ride"? The man asked looking from Evan to Zoe.
Zoe looked up to Evan with a questioned look on her face. Evan smiled down at her before kissing her forehead.
"You go, Zo. He should have his Mom with him. I'll follow behind with my car". Evan reassured her
Zoe allowed a thankful look to form onto her face. The paramedic smiled as well before escorting Zoe away to the ambulance. Upon seeing Oakley laying on the stretcher in the back, Zoe had to hold herself together.
She was sat right beside the boy's side. She held his small, cold hand in hers. His whole hand only being the side of her plam, if that. A woman stood to the left side getting everything set to take off.
"How old"? The woman asked
"He just turned 4". Zoe said looking at the child's face
"He looks a lot like you".
Zoe smiled, hearing that so often.
"I have two of my own at home... one's 7 and the other's 4 as well".
Normally Zoe hated small talk but she'd rather carry a conversation with a stranger then be alone with her thoughts right now.
"Don't worry... we'll take good care of him... he'll be just fine". She promised
After they pulled into the emergency room parking lot, they immediately carried Oakley into the building. Zoe followed close behind only to be stopped by the nurse.
"I'm sorry Miss, you'll have to wait back in the waiting room".
"You don't understand! My baby boy is in there! I need to be with him"! Zoe protested
"I'm sorry, the nurse will let you know when you and any family members can see him".
Zoe sat down in the corner, immediately putting her head in her hands. She felt a hand on her shoulder, she looked up to see Evan there. He took her hand in his, kissed it and kept it safe in his own grasp.
"Evan, our son is in there". Zoe said plainly, like she was still trying to understand what happened
"I know, babe... I know". Evan forced away a sob
"I should.... call my parents". Zoe sighed trying to stop the waterfall coming from her eyes
"Good idea, I'll call my Mom...Also, you better call Connor too. He's working most likely so he won't be able to come right away but... he'll still want to know". Evan said
Zoe nodded before standing up to head outside to the car for privacy. With a shaky hand she held her phone in her palm. Looking down at the black screen, she felt tears rushing again.
"Oh god". Zoe sobbed. "I'm a horrible mother! Mom and Dad are going to think so too! The one thing you thought they were proud of you for and you failed at it"! Zoe said out loud to herself
Finally Zoe knew she had to just get it over with. She dialed her Mom's number and slowly brought the cell to her ear. She listened to the calling sound before her Cynthia awnsered.
"Hi, Zoe"!
"Hey Mom". Zoe said as sorrow laced her voice, making it very clear she was crying
"Zoe, what's wrong..."? Cynthia asked immediately getting worried
"Oakley's.... he's in the hospital".
"Oh No! We're be right there"!
She immediately hung up leaving Zoe to call her brother. She wasn't as worried about Connor. Connor knows how overprotective Zoe is of Oakley... so he knows this wouldn't happen on a normal day.
"Hey Zo"! Connor awnsered
"Hey Con.... Oakley's... in the hospital".
"What?! What happened"?!
"He fell from the tree in the backyard. I have no idea how he climbed it or why he was even outside passed midnight but.... we found him unconscious this morning...". Zoe broke down to her brother
"Hey, it's okay... Zo, I'll be there as soon as I can... is Evan with you"?
"Yeah, He's calling Heidi".
"Okay, see you soon... oh and, sis"?
"Huh"?
"Don't worry... no one is going to think you're a bad Mom...". With that he hung up
How did Connor know that's exactly what Zoe was thinking? Finally Zoe's parents and Evan's Mom arrived. Everyone was worried but no one was as worried as Evan and Zoe.
Eventually the nurse came out slowly. She looked worried.
"Evan and Zoe Hansen"? They both rose and made there way over to the woman.
"Um... I have some bad news".
In that moment... both Zoe and Evan's world shattered.
