Connor faced me with a face of both anger and terror. I've never been the type of person to stand up and make a huge change but... even if Connor and I don't have the greatest relationship... the last thing I'd ever want for him is to end his own life.

Connor turned down the music before asking

"Why are you here anyway? Zoe hasn't been home all evening".

"I um.. I had to return Zoe's homework to her... s-she left it at my house".

Connor nodded before lighting a cigarette. The smoke flew freely off the stick that was inside the teenagers mouth.

"What are you looking at"? Connor snapped again

I forced my eyes away afraid to tip him to far. I feel like I've already gotten farther into his head then anyone else.

"You wanna hang out or what"? Connor eventually asked

"W-what"?

"I asked you if you wanted to hang out, or are you to busy to hang out with me"? Connor asked shooting me a look of "you better not turn down my request".

"Um.. sure".

"Want one"? Connor asked holding up a cigarette

"N-No thanks... I'm good". I said giving a small smile

I was expecting him to be angry with me for not accepting his offer but he just shrugged

"More for me".

"Y-You know.. maybe you should maybe um.. stop smoking... it's not healthy for you".

"You sound like my therapist that my mother forces me to go to. I know it's not healthy, I don't do it because I think it's good for me. I do it because..... sometimes that's the only way to cope with how shitty my life is".

"Maybe.. maybe it doesn't have to be so bad.... Maybe all you need is a.... friend". I instantly felt stupid for saying something like that to Connor Murphy

"Hm? You, you want to be my friend? Why"?

"Well because... you seem like a cool person. I would l-love to call you a friend".

"Interesting... okay well, here". Connor said holding out this phone

"What? W-why are you g-giving me--"?

"Relax, Hansen. I'm giving you my phone so you can put your number in it. I'm not doing the whole number on paper thing. We're not dating". Connor joked

I sighed in relief and put in my cell phone number and then handed Connor my phone to do the same. After a moment of silence Connor eventually spoke again.

"Wanna play so video games"?

"S-Sure"! I smiled

"You play video games"? He asked me while he grabbed two controllers from his box full of games.

"Y-Yeah, sometimes. My friend Jared and I sometimes play".

"Hm".

The two of us sat on the end of his bed and played some first person shooter game. Connor won.

"I thought you said you play games"? Connor laughed

"I-I do! I n-never said I was good"!

Connor broke out in and fit of laughter. Hearing him laugh was a different sound.

"You know what Evan Hansen"?

"H-Huh"?

"You're not so bad".

I couldn't hide the smile that appeared on my face.

"T-Thanks Connor... you're not so bad either".

Suddenly Connor's bedroom door opened and there stood Zoe. She looked really surprised.

"Evan? Connor, have you been tormenting him in your room"?! Zoe asked getting angry

Connor didn't make much of an effort to keep the happy vibe we had only moments before. He faded to silence

"No, it's o-okay, Zoe! C-Connor and I were hanging out"! I smiled

"What? You and Connor"?

"Yeah, we're friends now. He's really cool"!

Connor's eyes lit up in surprise by me standing up for him. Zoe looked beyond confused.

"Why are you even here anyway"? Zoe asked me, sounding meaner then she intended

"You left your homework at my house so I had to come give it to you before school tomorrow".

Zoe looked from me to Connor before saying

"I'm glad you guys are friends, I'll leave you to it". She chuckled before heading to her room

I blushed and turned away from Connor. He must have saw my blushing anyways.

"Look, I've gotta ask". Connor started

"Huh"?

"You've got to awnser honestly...".

"Okay"?

"Do you love Zoe"?

I was surprised by the sudden question. Of course I love Zoe, I've loved her for years.

"Yeah, o-of course".

"Good, don't you dare tell Zoe but.... I don't want to see her hurt. I know I've done my damage and I've hurt her enough all by myself... So in other words, you hurt her... I hurt you. Got it, Hansen"?

"G-Got it".

-----------------
Though out the rest of the week, I would call and text with Connor making sure he was okay and well. I never thought in a million years that I would be able to call Connor Murphy my friend.

I got a text from Zoe asking if I wanted to hang out. I had to run to the story for my Mom that day. Zoe asked if she could come along. I obviously said yes.

When I arrived at the Murphy house, I was no longer nervous about knocking and then entering. I wasn't scared that Connor or Mr. Murphy was going to answer the door. Even if Zoe and Connor's Dad hasn't exactly said it out loud, I know he doesn't hate me.

Maybe he likes me because I got Connor out of his room and I'm helping him stop drugs. I felt like I was really a part of a family. Even if my own relationship with my mother isn't the best, the relationship I have with Mrs, Murphy is way better. She even told me I could call her Cynthia.

I entered the house to see Connor sitting in the living room.

"Hey, Evan". He greeted

"Hey, Connor".

"Here for Zoe"? Connor asked standing up to stretch

I nodded while giving him a small smile.

"If you don't mind me asking, what are you going to do"?

"S-Shopping. Zoe asked t-to tag along".

"Oh, I don't want to invite myself or anything but... could I come. Or is this a date thing".

"No, it's not a date. If y-you want t-to come... you c-can".

Connor's eyes lit up as he grabbed his phone and stood with me to wait for Zoe. When she came down the stairs she saw Connor standing really close to me.

"Jeez Connor, I know you're friends but you don't have to hover".

"Actually I'm coming too, lil sis". Connor smirked

"What, Evan"?!

"S-Sorry babe... but he a-asked to come along...".

Zoe sighed and finally complied. With her hand in mine, we walked to my car or rather... my Mom's car.
