Here it is, September 4th at 6:30 am. This is always a stressful day for both child and parents. It's no secret at Oakley hated school. He wasn't very good at it and seemed to always get called out because of it.
Sure, he's only going into 3rd grade and shouldn't be so worried about what people think of him but haven't you ever heard of something called shyness? It isn't easy to just walk into a place and be confident with who you are. Especially not when you're Oakley Hansen.
Strummer on the other hand, was starting pre-school. He was excited to go somewhere to be on his own, make his own choices. If he decided he wasn't going to nap then gosh darn-it... he wasn't going to!
Little did Strummer know, school is the opposite of what he thinks it's like. Zoe woke them up like most mornings.
"It's the first day of school! We don't want to be late"! Zoe yelled throughout the bedroom.
Strummer sat up and rubbed his sleepy eyes. Then a smile broke onto his face. Finally, he can go and be a real grown-up! Oakley groaned and flipped his pillow over his head. It was to early to deal with this.
"Oakley! Wake up! It's your first day of 3rd grade, isn't that exciting"?!
"Not really..."
"Oakley wake up". Zoe pushed
"Okay.. fine".
Oakley's grown to hate getting in trouble. He doesn't fight it, he'd rather just hide in a hole then pick a fight with anyone, including his mother.
Evan had made breakfast for the family. Just some simple pancakes and fruit. Zoe was busy getting Strummer ready for the day while Oakley ate in silence.
"Hey... I know school isn't fun but... just be yourself no matter what and try to make the most of everyday". Evan smiled trying to prevent his son from experiencing everything he did in school.
The 8 year old let a small grin rest on his lips.
"That's Daddy".
"No problem, Oatie".
Zoe came down with Strummer on her hip. She looked kind of upset. Strummer started to eat happily.
"Hey Zo, Can I talk to you"? Evan questioned
"What is it"?
"You okay, babe"?
"I'm okay. I just can't believe that both of our boys are in school. Where did the time go"?
"I know, I can't believe it either".
"Mama! My pancake looks like a fishy"! Strummer yelled
"It does! Strum, look at mine"! Oakley smiled
Zoe and Evan turned and smiled. They are their own best company, that's for sure. Soon it was time to go. Oakley found himself extremely nervous over this.
Zoe drove the car this time so Evan could take a call from his office. Once they arrived there was so many people there from all age groups. Strummer was starting to think differently about this while school thing.
It sounded like fun at first but now he sees that there is like a hundred other people here, he's not happy about it.
"Mama, go home"? Strummer asked hoping this was all just a cruel joke. He didn't want to believe her had to stay here without them.
"Sorry, honey. Don't worry schools fun"! Zoe tried to be convincing but that didn't work out so well. Even she didn't believe herself.
The family got out of the car swiftly. Evan and Zoe still had to walk Strummer to his classroom and meet his teacher. Oakley slipped away to find Cohen.
He found him in the hallway. This was the first year they had lockers. It was exciting for a good 2 minutes.
"So, your brother start today too"? Cohen asked
"Yeah. He's actually excited". Oakley said flatly
"Well.. give him time. He will know soon".
The children filed into the classroom and started there first day.
Meanwhile in Strummer classroom, things weren't going to well. Just like for Oakley, Strummer was not a fan of running and screaming people. Except it didn't make him scared or shy, it annoyed him.
"Hey what's your name"? A kid asked
"Strummer, why"?
"Wait, Strummer that's your name? It's kinda silly don't you think? My name is much cooler, it's Jorgen".
"Huh? Jorgen... that is the dumbest name I've ever heard. Is your full name Jorgen Van-strangle"?
"N-No. You're mean"!
"No, I'm not. You're mean, you made fun of my name first"! Strummer shot back
"Well maybe I wouldn't of if you didn't have a stupid name"! Jorgen said back
"Shut up"! Strummer yelled bringing attention to himself.
"Excuse me? We don't talk that way in here, Mr Hansen. I'm going to have to ask you to sit in time out"! The teacher scolded
"But he started it"! Strummer defended
"I don't care, I'm finishing it. Chair Mr".
Strummer groaned in annoyance. School is stupid. Why do I have to even come here, Strummer thought.
Strummer was given the chance to rejoin the class several times but refused. It isn't fair! Jorgen didn't get in trouble so why did Strummer?
Oakley remained silent and in his own little bubble with Cohen until the day ended. Oakley was instructed to meet his parents and brother at Strummer's classroom.
When he got there he saw his parents talking to the teacher. Strummer was crying and from what Oakley could hear, it wasn't good.
Strummer had to sit in time-out when he got home. It was from that day on, Strummer Matthew Hansen hated school.
