Emily Summers (Short)

The two were alone... Emily had a small smile on her face but Oakley could tell she wasn't exactly comfortable with just standing in the doorway of his room.

"You have a nice room". Emily eventually said just to fill the dead air

"T-Thanks... My Mom is a interior designer so... she decorated it for my brother and I".

"That's awesome".

There was much room for conversation but no one was making the moves in the right direction. Oakley's palms were sweaty and he knew his face was turning red.

"Look... I don't want you to think we have to be anything... if you don't want to. I know my step brother beat you up and.... got you suspended then it got put on your permanent record... I'm just so sorry for it all". Emily's eyes grew red which took Oakley by surprise. She's crying? Why? Over him? Do something you idiot don't just watch her cry over you!

"W-Why are you crying"?

"Because! Russell does crap like that all of the time! Once people find out I'm his step sister... they become scared of me. I have to be the best at everything so I can out shadow my brother's behavior".

Oakley understood all to well. If it wasn't for his racing, he would have nothing he was better at over Strummer. It's always been like that though. Strum was the prodigy child while... Oakley just tried his best but even that was never enough.

Not with school
Not with social interaction
Not with sports
Not even with Oakley's rising depression.

Whenever Oakley was doing really bad mentally, there was Strummer to make himself seem like he's doing worse. Even if Strum didn't mean to... it all just sort of happens.

"I don't think you should have to do that".

"Do what"? Emily questioned

"Work hard to out shadow Russell. You're who you are... you're special and unique and.. beautiful". Oakley immediately covered his mouth with his hands

Oh my god, did he just say that?!

"You.. you really think that"?

"I do... I really do".

Oakley's eyes grew wide as Emily approached slowly. Soon they were inches away.

"Hey Oatie, I have a question". Evan interrupted

The teens pulled away as quickly as possible.

"Y-Y-Yeah Dad"?

"Oh you have a girl here"?

"Dad can you come back at a different time... nows not great".

"I just need to know if you've seen my keys".

"Car keys"?

"Yeah, I have to take your Mom to calm down".

"What? You have to take her... it's normally the other way around". Oakley partly giggled

"I know. She's having very mixed emotions now that Strummer's back".

"I think I saw them on the kitchen hook".

"Ah thanks, see you later... and have fun".

Evan closed the door behind him, leaving the teens alone again.

"Well... uh.. I better get going. I still have to be at the dance. But, thanks for everything". Emily blushed

"Thanks? For what? You're the one who I should be thanking".

"Thank you for not hating me because of Russell... you're really sweet, Oakley".

Emily planted a small kiss on Oakley's cheek. This left the boy in a confused but excited vibe. Once Emily left Oakley rested. He felt somewhat good for once.
