The conversation at the table immediately somehow shifted to me. Why me? I felt eyes digging into me but remembered they were just my family's eyes.
"Also... Zoe and I are happy being parents of one child". I said when everyone looked to me for a response
"Yes, you can give the kid all the love in the world". Zoe gushed
I looked to my mother who seemed either... happy we liked the idea of having one child like she did or... upset that she couldn't give me all the love in the world.
"Like me, having just my Mom around was great". I lied for the sake of my mother's feelings. We are so great now but that doesn't erase my high school experience.
Everyone then smiled and the conversation ended. We soon all got our food. Oakley seemed to have enjoyed his chicken nuggets.
"Daddy, this one looks like Mommy in the morning"!
Everyone laughed as Zoe looked over confused. The chicken nugget looked like a person's head with really messy long hair. When Zoe realized this she was both insulted but amused.
"This one looks like Papa's baseball glove".
Larry laughed as he noticed the resemblance. Everytime we would notice a chicken nugget looking like something else he would point in out to everyone.
"This one looks like Bingo"! Bingo was Oakley's gerbil that died last year. Oakley was really upset about it.
Finally after everyone finished eating, I got a call. It was from work.
"Hello, Evan Hansen speaking". I said steping outside
"Hello, this is Mrs, Hillson calling about my son, Jakob... he was suppose to see you today but we had to cancel".
"Ah, yes. Jakob Hillson. Is everything okay"?
"Well, not really. Would it be at all possible for him to meet with you tonight"?
My heart sunk. I really was looking forward to spending time with my family tonight. But unfortunately, this is my job, to help people like me remember that they will be found and that they are never alone.
"Yes, of course. I'm currently out to dinner with my family but can meet you at my office".
"Awe, thank you so much! We'll meet you in an hour if that works".
"Sure, see you then".
I sighed in disappointment before turning to see Zoe there. She looked confused and upset.
"Sorry, Zo. Someone needs me". I frowned hugging her. She moved from my grasp and I heard her sniffing
"Evan, I'm tired of you always having to leave".
"I know Baby, me too. This is my job someone needs me".
"I need you, Evan! Oakley needs you! I'm sick of feeling like I'm raising him by myself! I understand this is your job but maybe, maybe something needs to change". Zoe said as she walked away from me
She then returned with Oakley in his arms. I was really to give them a quick ride home before Zoe told me that my Mom is going to drive them home. I frowned but nodded understanding. I drove off to my office.
OAKLEYS POV
Mommy looks sad... so does Daddy. I don't like when they are sad. I wanted to ask but never got the chance before Grams did."Zoe, sweetheart.... what's wrong"?
"It's just Evan. I hate that he always has to leave us. I miss him and I being able to be together. Now it's a battle to have one night uninterrupted with him".
