Amara's P.O.V
I managed to avoid my parents on Sunday. I either pretended to be asleep or I hid in the bathroom. When Monday came around, I was actually excited to go to school for once. I quickly got myself ready and waited in my room for my best friend, Chris, to come and pick me up.
Chris was my best friend since I've moved here. She was the complete opposite of me but we were the best of friends. Chris was in a band who was gaining fame every month. Her band, The New Wild, has played in various places and I was grateful to have watched almost every single show of theirs.
When she texted me that she was here, I quickly ran downstairs to get out of the house.
"Amara, wait!" My mom said.
"Can't talk. I really need to get to school," I tell her before leaving the house. I got inside Chris's car quickly.
"Woah. What's gotten you in such a rush?" She asked me.
"I'll tell you at school," I mumbled.
"Alright."
Every morning before school, Chris and I would sit on the bleachers and just talk about random stuff. This was a tradition since our freshman year. This particular talk however was going to be extremely different.
"What's wrong?" Chris asked me as we sat on the bleachers.
"I just found out on Saturday night that I am engaged to someone," I told her. Chris stared at me as if I had two heads.
"I'm sorry, what?" She asked me.
"I am engaged to someone," I tell her.
"Okay what the hell are you talking about? Full story please," Chris said.
"My parents apparently had made this arrangement when I was a kid and so I am going to be married off to Brennan Kindell," I tell her.
"Hold on. Brennan Kindell? That playboy billionaire?" Chris asked me. I nodded at her.
"What are you going to do with Travis?" Chris asked me.
"I don't know. I love him and I don't want to break up with him," I tell her.
"Well there is only one thing to do now," Chris tells me.
"What?" I asked her.
"You and I are going to run away to Canada. Travis can come visit us. We leave first thing after gradnite," Chris told me.
"Too bad I didn't apply to any colleges outside of America," I sighed.
"Take a gap year," Chris tells me. I looked at her with a small smile.
"By the way, can you keep this a full on secret?" I asked her.
"My lips are sealed," Chris tells me.
"Thank you."
"Thought I'd find you girls here," We looked down to see my boyfriend, Travis, walking up.
Travis and I have been together since our junior year. We met during history and sparks flew when he and I first talked. When my parents told me I couldn't date, I asked Travis to keep our relationship a secret from them. Travis being the best, he did and played it off as if we were only friends when my parents were around.
"Hey," I smiled.
"Hi, beautiful," Traivs said, giving me a kiss on the lips.
"Gross," Chris said.
"Morning to you too, Chris," Travis smiles.
"Oh! Before I forget, I have a gig coming up. You guys down to come?" Chris asked me.
"You know I'll always come to your shows," I tell her.
"My number one fan," Chris smiled at me.
School felt short. I know that most people loved that but in my situation, I was practically begging for it to be long. After school had ended, I walked out with Chris, only to see Brennan leaning against his car. My eyes widen before stopping my tracks. Thank god Travis had a thing to do after school today.
"What?" Chris asked me.
"He's right over there," I tell her. She looked over at Brennan. She looked at him up and down before looking at me.
"Shall we run?" She asked me.
"No point. He probably knows where I live," I tell her.
"Right," Chris nodded.
"If you see Travis, tell him I'm with a family friend," I tell her.
"You have to tell him about this, Amara. Sooner or later," She tells me.
"I will but not now," I tell her.
"Alright. I'll see you later. Keep your phone on you. I'll pick you up in the middle of the street if I have to," Chris said.
"Thanks," I chuckled.
I walked over to Brennan who didn't take off his sunglasses. Thank god too. The last thing I needed was rumors spreading before the senior activities and graduation.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Your mother thought that I should pick you up from school. Get to know each other more," Brennan tells me.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because we're going to be mar-"
I shushed him by placing my hand over his mouth. After realizing what I did, my eyes widen before pulling away.
"Sorry. Just don't mention that around here," I said.
"Well, why don't we go to your house where my parents are waiting at and we can discuss it there?" Brennan told me.
"Fine," I mumbled. Brennan opened the door for me. I got inside and put my backpack on the floor. I put on my seat belt as Brennan got in the driver's side.
The drive to my place was quiet. I stared out the window most of the time.
"So, um. How was school?" Brennan asked me. I looked at him with a raise eyebrow.
"Really?" I asked.
"Just trying to make small talk," Brennan shrugged.
"Well it's not working," I tell him.
"It kinda is. You're talking to me right now," Brennan tells me. He had gotten me there.
"Fair point," I mumbled.
"I know you're not happy about this arranged marriage and all-"
"I'm not happy," I tell him.
"But I want to be at least friends," Brennan tells me.
"Just friends?" I asked him.
"If you'll have me as a friend," Brennan says.
"Okay fine. We can be friends," I tell him.
