"Come to the dance with me."

You thought Valentine's Day was a dumb holiday, with the sappy romance and cheesy gifts, but apparently no one else held the same opinion as every student in school buzzed around excitedly, looking for a date for the Valentine's Day dance your school was throwing in celebration of the special day. When you first heard the announcement about the dance, you couldn't help but shudder at the thought of dozens of couples together in one big room, kissing and flirting. You had no intention of going, even if someone asked you. It just wasn't your thing.

So when Chaeyoung asked you to accompany her to the dance, you rolled you eyes. "No way," You said firmly, not even looking up from your lunch, "the dance is a stupid idea, and I have much better things to do than be around gross, overly romantic couples. And besides, why would I ever want to go to a Valentine's dance with you?"

"Oh please, as if I'd ever want you to be my date." Chaeyoung mocked with a light slap to the shoulder, which you returned. "Anyway, I think it'll be fun. I just want someone to tag along so I won't be by myself."

"That's too bad, because I'm not going." You told her bluntly, and she frowned.

You wouldn't exactly be against going to the dance with Chaeyoung, for the sole reason of having feelings for her, but you'd never tell her that, even though you felt like your growing crush on her was becoming more and more obvious, and sometimes you couldn't help but think that she had mutual feelings. You had an image to keep up as her best friend, and you wouldn't budge to going to the dance with her, even if you did kind of want to.

It didn't help that your entire friendship with Chaeyoung consisted of teasing and playful, subtle flirting. You were sure she only meant any flirtatious statement she made as a joke, but there was always a small part of you that hoped she was being serious.

"Come on, (Y/N)," Chaeyoung narrowed her eyes at you, "if you don't come with me, I swear I'll never talk to you again."

"Oh please, you'd fail. I know you can't resist me."

"Maybe so," Chaeyoung whispered as she leaned in closer to you, "but that doesn't mean i won't try."

She wouldn't drop it after that. Every few minutes, she'd flash you those big. irresistable puppy eyes that you were perpetually weak to, but you still refused. You would have sooner sat outside in the rain for 4 hours than attend the stupid dance.

Chaeyoung knew that, but she was a stubborn girl.

It took you three days before you gave in.

You're not entirely sure how Chaeyoung managed to convince you, but she did. Maybe it was because you secretly liked the idea of getting to spend time with Chaeyoung in a romantic setting, or maybe it was just because her pestering grew to be so annoying that you had to put an end to it- you tried to convince yourself that it was the latter.

You weren't entirely sure though.

Chaeyoung came to your house to get ready for the dance the night of Valentine's Day, with her dress and heels in her bag as she waltzed right in through your front door without even knocking (it came with years of friendship). You were doing your hair when she arrived, and she smirked as she threw herself down on your bed.

"Don't even bother, you'll look ugly either way." Chaeyoung snickered the moment you began to apply your makeup, her mouth curved into a grin.

You stuck your tongue out at her. "I'll still look better than you."

You took turns using the mirror to get ready and look presentable, nudging each other out of the way when one was taking too long, throwing smart-mouthed comments that were meant as nothing other than jokes.

"Are you almost ready?" You questioned as you straightened the necklace you had chosen to wear while Chaeyoung applied the finishing touches to her makeup beside you. She looked stunning, and you could have sworn you were blushing.

"Yeah." Chaeyoung nodded as she applied her lip gloss. "Listen," she mumbled as she smacked her lips, "I don't care what anyone says, cherry flavored lip gloss beats out all other flavors."

You laughed. "Does it taste good?"

"Why don't you kiss me and find out?"

If you weren't blushing before, you definitely were now, and the way Chaeyoung was looking at you, her dark chocolate eyes shining brightly as she eyed you with a flirtatious demeanor, had you looking nervously at your feet.

When you didn't look up, Chaeyoung laughed. "What a chicken!" she teased relentlessly, shoving you playfully, and you stumbled back a bit.

"Am not!" You whined, making Chaeyoung laugh harder than before.

"So kiss me, then!" It was a challenge Chaeyoung was urging you to partake in, but you were hesitant, and simply took a quick glance at your friend before your eyes darted back to the floor.

You felt Chaeyoung's hand under your chin, tilting your head up so your eyes were level. "I swear, (Y/N)," she mumbled and she leaned in closer, "do I have to do everything?"

When her lips met yours, it took you a moment to process what exactly was happening, your mouth stiff and unmoving against Chaeyoung's own, but as soon as your brain registered that your best friend and crush was kissing you, your hands reached out to hold her waist as you kissed her back, and you felt Chaeyoung smile.

The kiss was short, with Chaeyoung breaking away just a second or two after you returned the kiss, and her eyes shined brightly as she giggled at you, hands resting on your shoulders. "Well, it looks like you're my date after all..."

"I guess so." You grinned, taking Chaeyoung by the hand and leading her out of your room. "I'd say you're lucky to have a date as awesome as me."

"Pft, I'd say it's the other way around, loser."
