Sophie forced herself away from the blackness of sleep, to find a familiar face looking down at her. It was a troll with blue-green skin and green dreadlocks that held a smooth glossy sheen.
"What are you…." Sophie began, but then the realization dawned. "Uh-oh." She groaned, trying to hide under the covers.
"Uh-oh indeed. Now, would you care to explain where you have been?" A recognizable high-pitched voice asked, quite sternly too. So Sophie plunged into the long explanation, and by the end everyone was speechless. Everyone except for Bo.
"Is he dead?" Bo asked, not an ounce of sorrow in his tone. Sophie wished she could answer, but to do that she would need to know herself, so she just shrugged. A door opened nearby, causing Sophie to sit up and whip her head to the closest door.
"Sorry, Sophie." Biana said, flames burning her cheeks into a pink color. "I just thought you might want to change." She held out a purple tunic and black pants, matched with burgundy boots. It is what, by Sophie's standards, would be fancy. Then again compared Biana's teal tunic with a gold sash and golden flowers embroidered into the neckline, it was oh-so-plain. Biana also wore her hair swept back with a jeweled, gold flowered, barrette. Sophie's bodyguards left the room so she could change after MANY "we will continue this later"s, and Sophie slipped into the elegant outfit Biana lent her. Sophie also decided to wear the amethyst headband Biana had hidden between her pants and tunic. She walked out the door, surprised that there wasn't an army of bodyguards waiting. It was just Flori.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Flori asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes looked glossed over as she stared blankly at the floor.
"I don't know." Sophie admitted, wringing her hand against each other. "Yesterday when Linh and I left it was too early to tell." Sophie could feel the tears welling up, but she refused to let them go.
She and Flori eventually found their way to the Everglen dining room, a place Sophie had been very few times. Because of how large Everglen really is, the two struggled; but when they were about to give up Sophie latched onto someone's thoughts and tracked them. A few moments later they were surrounded by so many people, even the grand room felt claustrophobic. At one end of the long table Alden and Della were sitting, sorrow clouding their eyes. Though they never knew Tam well, they were the kind of people that care about everyone. To their right was Woltzer, Sandor, Tarina, Grizel, Ro, and the rest of the bodyguards talking amongst themselves in hushed tones. From were Sophie stood she could not eavesdrop, but she guessed it was not strategy they were talking about. Farther down the table was...Lord Cassius?
Sophie tried not to let her surprise show, but she was pretty sure her jaw dropped. She kept looking and saw a few gnomes, Grady and Edaline, then at the very end was her friends. They were all just quietly chatting, including Dex and Wylie who must have shown up while she was in bed. Sophie began to make her way over to join the discussion with her friends. Fitz was sitting on the outside, an open chair on his left was closer to the others and he clearly saved for her. She took the empty seat and the hand Fitz offered, feeling fire graze her cheeks when he flashed his perfect smile.
"Good afternoon, did you get enough beautyrest?" Fitz teased, Sophie was about to scoff when she realized what he had actually said.
"Afternoon?" She asked, looking all over the room for some sort of clock. Then she turned back to Fitz, "What time is it?"
"Somewhere around two o'clock?" He answered. Sophie buried her head in her free hand, wishing she hadn't lost so much time. She felt a squeeze on the hand held by Fitz. "It's okay, I know you don't sleep much. I would have let you sleep for hours more. Epically science it didn't require..." He sucked in a breath. "Sedatives." Sophie raised her head, feeling her eyes dilate as shame panged at her heart.
"How did you…." Her voice trailed off, as she met Fitz's perfect teal eyes. He gave her a shy smile and answered her in a small voice.
"Edaline told me. I understand but...But I wish I could help" his eyebrows pressed together and a look of seriousness washed over his face. "Please promise me you'll let me help. I may not be an inflictor...but we are cognates. If something happened to you I…." He let out a shaky exhale and Sophie felt her shame flare.
"Of course. The same goes for you tough. " They just sat there, looking into each other's eyes, letting the background chatter just dial down into white noise.
"Uhhhh. Anyone else feel awkward? Should we let Fitzphie do their thing?" Keefe interrupted. "Or did we decide on Sophitz? Personally, I'm rooting for Sophitz." Sophie's face went from blushing to being set on fire, like a blazing inferno. Fitz looks pink too. They tore their eyes away from each other and looked all around the room.
"Sorry, for what I did to you yesterday Keefe." He shrugged, but no one seemed to want to add anything to the conversation. "So….what have you guys been talking about?” She prompted, silently begging for a subject change. Everyone's expression went somber, and Wylie put his arm around Linh.
“We were deciding who is gonna go visit Tam-we filled Dex in on everything by the way. Anyway, Elwin hailed us and said you, Fitz, and one other person can go." Biana explained. "I think we finally agreed on Linh going with."
"How was that even an argument?" Sophie asked, purely confused. "Of course Linh should go! I mean-" Linh held up her hand to stop Sophie from continuing.
"Everyone was worried that I couldn't handle it, but I can." She gave the saddest, most heartbreaking smile. "Everyone thinks I'm weak because Tam protects me, and yes I do sometimes freeze up, but what people think is often wrong. You've seen the strength of my powers, but they don't even rival the strength of my mind. If I seem like I'm cocky I don't mean to be. But I'm not this delicate flower everyone thinks I am." She looked so driven, and her sad smile was gone. Giving her an expression of pure determination. It was settled. The three stepped outside and said goodbye, promising many times to fill their friends in on everything. Then as the others wandered back inside Sophie, Linh, and Fitz levitated to a height that teleportation was achievable. Then they plummeted. Right before they were about to be nothing more than corpses on grass Sophie tore a crack into the sky and brought them to Foxfire
