"When you and Fitz were searching his memories it shut you out after a certain point, I think that could be, in part, because he is subconsciously repressing that memory. That way it would not have to relive whatever trauma was caused."
"I've read about that, but the only way the mind would repress a memory like that is if...if it had an extremely severe amount of pain associated with it." Sophie's fears grew deeper as Elwin nodded.
"Once that memory re-surfaces who knows what’ll happen.“ Sophie could feel her chin drop slightly as she turned to leave.”One more thing Sophie.” Elwin called to Sophie before she began walking away. “ I’m sorry about having Fitz sedate you last week. It wa-”
“It's fine.” Sophie interrupted. “Fitz let me see his memory and I completely understand why you did what you did.”
“I’m glad you aren’t too mad. But I’m pretty sure he skipped over the fact I forced him to let me check him over as well.” Elwin smiled, making Sophie chuckle.
“Why am I not surprised?” She laughed, then glanced over her shoulder at her friends waiting by the door. “I should go, the others are waiting for me.” Elwin nodded and slid back into the Healing Center still smiling. She made her way to Fitz waiting for her by the door.
“Everyone else already leapt back to Everglen. What was that about?” He asked as he fumbled through the folds of his neckline for his home crystal.
“I was just asking if he thought Tam would be paralyzed.”
“What did he say?”“That he will be at minimum temporarily paralyzed, but the rest depends on if he lets himself get better or not.”
“Sound familiar?” He said it in a teasing tone, but it hit home way too hard. Fitz seemed to feel the same because he got suddenly quiet as they leaped back to Everglen silently.
“What took you so long?” Keefe ask-yelled at them as soon as they glittered back onto Everglen amazing property.
“We were talking to Elwin about Tam.” Sophie answered.
“And?” Linh requested, with a clear hint of hope in her tone.
“Remember when I told you guys that there was a chance of Tam being permanently paralyzed?” Everyone nodded, and Sophie filled them on for what the chances were. The group stayed in the garden for a while longer, just talking about random odds and ends that were on their mind. After what seemed to be minutes but was probably actually hours the sun began to set, they went inside to pack whatever of their things were at the estate and headed home.
Hours after she arrived back at Havenfield, when the sky was pitch black, Sophie crawled into bed. She clamped her eyes shut, tossing and turning, forcing herself to go to sleep. After trying for nearly an hour she gave up, and was about to go grab one of the sedatives she despised, then she remembered her promise. She sighed and reluctantly stretched out her consciousness to Fitz’s, promising that if he didn’t respond she wouldn't bother him.
Fitz? She transmitted timidly.
Yes? His mental voice asked almost instantly.
You remember the promise you had me make to you?
Yeah. Is this you asking me to help?
Maybe…
No need to be shy about it. We all need help sometimes, there is no shame in asking for it.
Still. I shouldn’t be asking you guys for help, I should just be there to help you.
That’s a lie.
No. It’s not. I need to be stronger than this.
You're joking right? You don’t always have to be strong.
Yes I do. Otherwise what help am I?
You should let us help you every now and again, we can take the lead if you know you can’t. Again: There is no shame in asking for help.
I guess...Well I know. You ready?
I think so.
Okay, if your transmissions stop I will take that as a sign that you fell asleep. Sound good?
Yeah
Alright, 3, 2, 1
As soon as he transmitted 1 her mind filled with the calming melody she heard while she was in the Healing Center. It was just as peaceful as it had been the previous week, but it was also exactly. A thought had began to form in her mind but it was drowned out as she finally fell asleep.
