_________________________________________“This isn’t what I meant Foster.” Keefe complained as they began to go from pasture to pasture scooping up manure.
“Sorry guys, but hey; It's not my fault you came. I just put you to use.” Sophie grinned, feeling slightly meniechal. Keefe sighed heavily and Dex let out a giggle.
“What are you laughing at? We all know Foster is the only one that can rock dung.” He smirked, reminding them of one of the most embarrassing moments of Sophie’s life, and that's saying something.
Scooping manure from all of the pastures at Havenfield was… a chore. It was ten times more enjoyable with the boys there, but there was enough waste to clog up an entire city’s plumbing system. Dex and Keefe left when the sun was starting to set, and Sophie went back inside. Grady and Edaline were sitting at the dinner table, with plates full of purple lettuce-looking meals.
"Hey, could you come over here a second kiddo?" Grady asked her pulling her chair out from the table to let her sit down. Sophie smiled and walked over to her seat, beginning to dig into her plate of purple lettuce, which tasted a lot like Teriyaki Chicken.
"What's up?" She asked between mouthfuls. Grady and Edaline shared a look, then Edaline nodded and Grady gave a drawn-out sigh.
"We just got a new assignment from the Council, and we figured we should tell you ahead of time."
"Okay?"
"Well, Sophie," Edaline chimed in. "This assignment is a lot longer than others. They want us both, and we'll be gone for around a month." Sophie didn't know what to do with what Edaline just said. She could hold her own, but taking care of all of the creatures of Havenfield, alone?
"I see that look," Grady near chuckled. "You won't have to do it alone. We are making arrangements for some of your friends to stay here with you and help you out."
"Nice job putting the boys to work today by the way." Edaline smiled.
"Like who?" Sophie asked, depending on who they choose that month could be really difficult.
"Dex, Keefe, Biana, Linh, Wylie, Marella and Fitz." Edaline grinned again. "That is if they are all allowed. But that is everyone we reached out to." Sophie struggled to contain her excitement. Being with her other friends everyday for a month? The progress they could make was unbelievable. Sophie knew she was more excited for one person to come than the others, but she tried to deny what was running through her head.
"So, I assume that'll suffice?" Grady laughed, apparently Sophie didn't do well enough hiding her smile."Beyond suffice. Thank you guys." She was pretty sure her smile was stretching wider than the Cheshire Cat's. "When are you guys going to go?"
"As far as we know leave in two days . And before you ask, we can't tell you where we are going or what we're doing. All we can say is that we will be out of reach of the imparters. But before you freak out, it's not going to be somewhere dangerous. Simply out of reach." Grady tried to reassure her after her eyes widened. "I don't mean to steal Alden's famous quote, but there is no reason to worry." Sophie tried to believe Grady, but there is a very slim chance that he was being honest. The vast majority of places an imparter couldn’t reach were places that were less than safe.
“Why can’t you tell me where you’re going?” Sophie asked, hoping for at least a shred of closure. Edaline chuckled.
“If we could say that don’t you think we would have by now?” She smiled, moving behind Sophie’s back and strangling her in a hug. Once she finally released Sophie she snapped her fingers, making a tray of Mallowmelt appear simultaneously with their dinner plates disappearing. Sophie helped herself to more pieces than she probably needed, but Grady ate probably twice as much as her, causing Edaline to roll her eyes at both of them. After the tray was successfully empty, even of crumbs, she went upstairs to begin getting ready for bed.
After her shower she climbed into her bed and pulled out her SpyBall again, not entirely sure why. She uttered the name of her sister, happy to see her sleeping soundly with their new-ish dog. Sophie was about to give in and try to sleep, but she had an odd deire to check up on one other person, someone she has never thought to check on before.
