Tam? She transmitted. Tam, it's me, Sophie. Fitz is here with me. Can you hear me? The question seemed to echo off his mind, and Sophie was just starting to lose hope as a figure emerged from the shadows.
"Hello?" Tam asked, not aloud. Only Sophie and Fitz could hear him. He stepped forward yet again, leaving the shadows that hid his face behind. The Tam that was in front of them was the Tam that had existed before he left with the Neverseen. The Tam that had no mark on his eye or wounds covering his arms. Are you okay? Fitz asked, his mental voice sounding so worried.
"Peachy." He replied sarcastically, somber silence followed and the mental picture of Tam's smirk disappear. "Sorry, not a good time for jokes. Is Linh okay?" His mental voice was riddled with concern.She's….trying. But it's hard, you know? When we found you in the forest….. Her transmission drifted off, not being able to finish the sentence. It’s taken its toll.
"I didn't mean for this." Tam said, regret soaking the words. It's okay. This isn't your fault. Fitz responded, and Sophie could not quite place the tone of the thought. But it was too close to guilt. Sophie squeezed his hand in an effort to comfort him.
What is the last you remember? Sophie asked timidly. A shudder ran through his mind, causing Sophie to quickly add If you aren't ready-
"No." Tam interrupted. "You need to know what happened." The thought seemed to shake, and then the darkness around them dissolved until they were in his memory.Tam was sitting at what seemed to be a desk with a metal countertop and a bit of yellowed paper sitting atop it. He sat writing on the paper, no. Not writing. He seemed to be drawing something, and his skills rivaled Keefe's.
"STOP!" A girl's voice cried. He tried his best to ignore it but there was a slight familiarity to the sound. "PLEASE STOP!" Then it hit him. The voice was Linh's. Tam bolted to his feet and raced to throw open the door. "SOMEONE! HELP! PLEASE!" The voice cried, and Tam's pace sped up as he followed the voice. It led him down winding paths and countless corners. "PLEASE!" Linh begged, he took another sharp left and found a room with an open door. Cautiously he stepped into the room."Linh?" He called. As soon as he was a few paces in the room the door slammed shut behind him. The chill of goosebumps covered his arms and before he could think of anything he was stuck. Something strong was wrapped around his waist, imbolizing his arms, with equal force being applied to his neck. No matter how much he twisted or turned the solid grip refused to give way. Tam scanned his surroundings: rusty iron bars were splitting the room in half, while leaving a large gap in between the wall and the end of the final bar. Shadows crowded every corner, hiding whoever was surely waiting.
"Hello Tam." A sickeningly familiar voice greeted as Lady Gisela stepped into view, her black hood thrown down. "Were you expecting someone else?” She asked. Rage bubbled inside Tam and he wished he could smack her smirk clean off her stupid perfect face. "Drop him Alvar." She ordered. Pain shot tough his lower body as Alvar snapped his femur. Tam dropped to the ground, pain rimming his eyes in red as he fought to not let the screams leave his mouth, failing so terribly. There was a flash of light and Tam's hands were stuck inside their own force fields. A pair zhoes stalked close to Tam's shaking body, human shoes. The wearer of the shoes crouched next to him and instantly Tam recognized the sinister smile. He probably just got off another assignment in the Forbidden Cities.Tam felt Gethen’s finger on his temple and a sensation of pain bombarded his senses. It felt like thousands of sharp daggers were aiming for his mind, and every single one hit its mark. Tam writhed around on the ground, screaming in agony as he tried to escape the pain. The torment was like nothing he could have ever even imagined, and it didn't waver for a single second. He would have given anything to have just a moment of relief. But the pain reared its ugly head in response to his plea and made the misery double. Running out of energy he found a slight tug in a far corner of his mind. Slowly it became a pull, and Tam let the pull take over. It took him to a safe place, a place where the pain was just a pang. The pang never left, but unconsciousness won over. So glad for the gift he was receiving Tam drifted to the dark abyss.
The memory turned fuzzy, signaling its end, but a feeling of incompletion followed. Like something was missing. Sophie had so many emotions swirling around her mind that she could not find the dominant one.
"Sophie." Tam's mental voice quivered. "You have to go. I'm doing the best I can but you need to go!"
