Pain overtook Tam before he could respond, and all of his focus diverted to not screaming. Gethen seemed to be enjoying his job way too much. He acted like a madman, and it was agony. The blade found it's way all over him, leaving future scars. The pain was relentless, and it caused Tam to yelp despite himself. This just fueled Gethen. He brought the weapon up to Tam's face, and pulled the blade from under his bangs to over his eye, then down to the corner of his lip. This time Tam couldn't hold back his scream.
The pain never wavered, but started blurring together. He could no longer tell what hurt, just that it did. It intensified, and he could get a general idea that it was near his waist. It was agony, and it lasted what felt like eons. Then suddenly a miracle happened, it stopped. But by then the damage was done. Gethen hadn't finished him then, but he knew he would die of his injuries. The only way he could possibly survive them is by getting medical help fast, but that wasn't going to happen. He felt something come off his chest and assumed Gethen had been satisfied with his accomplishment and stood. He would've opened his eyes to check, but he didn't have the energy. Tam heard footsteps followed by a chuckle.
"I wonder what your tree will look like." Gethen said, followed by the noise of a door shutting. It was then that he couldn't hold anything back anymore, and he felt tears wet his cheeks. He would have been bawling if he had the energy, but he didn’t. So he just continued crying, the feeling of guilt welling in his chest. The Neverseen had won this time. He knew his death would give a blow to the group, but not in the way the Neverseen was thinking. Their spirits wouldn’t be crushed, if anything it would just fuel them, but the guilt...the guilt would shatter them.
Literally.
That’s just the way they were. This might push them over the edge. That’s what really hurt. He could be the reason for their downfall. The reason for Biana’s downfall.
Don’t even think about her, A voice in the back of his head told him. He knew it was right; just thinking about what might happen to her hurt him more then the wounds ever could.
He heard the door creak as it opened again, and he tried to pull himself together. It was hard considering most of his energy was being devoted to keeping him alive. He felt whoever had opened the door to pick him up, and wow did it hurt. He couldn’t help but groan when they started walking, and when the person moved the way he shifted along with them it just added to the pain.
Eventually they got outside, the only reason he knew was because the light got suddenly brighter. The person that was carrying him set him down for a moment, picking him up again with something else in his hand this time. He felt the familiar feeling of warmth pulling him away, recognized it as light-leaping in just enough time to try to concentrate enough to keep himself from fading. Being completely honest, light-leaping when you’re half dead is hard. Now he understood what Sophie had gone through all those years ago, and he didn’t have to protect someone else.
The warmth disappeared, signaling the end of the leap, and he let out a sigh of relief. He had made it through the leap. He tried to cling to that hope, but he knew that the odds were against him. The person set him down, but surprisingly didn’t leap away. Instead Tam heard the ruffeling of fabric, then a cool vile was pressed against his lips.
"Drink," The voice ordered, and it sounded familiar, but he didn’t have the energy to place it. He debated whether he should listen or not, but eventually decided he may as well. He knew he would die anyways, so what did he have to lose? He downed the liquid, surprised when he recognized it. It was a Bottle of Youth. Why would the Neverseen, who had tried to kill him, give him a Bottle of Youth?
"Why?" Tam managed to ask, and regretted it immediately.
"I was never on board with their plan for you," The voice said. "For what it’s worth I never wanted to see you killed. So, try to survive."
"Why does it matter to you?"
"It doesn’t. I only said I never agreed with their plan, I never said that I would miss you. I’m doing this for my sister, and for her alone." The tone of the voice had no shred of pity in it, whoever was speaking was being completely honest when they said they didn’t care if he died. But the voice was still familiar, and something about what they said...Then it clicked. He mentioned his sister, she was the only one he was doing this for.
"Alvar?" Tam asked. He tried to open his eyes and confirm his theory, but he barely had the energy to breathe.
"My sister is counting on you. Do it for her," Alvar said before laying Tam on his side.
After several moments of silence Tam assumed Alvar had left, but what he’d done completely surprised him. He still cared about his sister; even though he joined her sworn enemy. He wasn’t sure how she would react hearing it, but he decided he wanted to be around to tell her. Now, at least he had a chance; and he wasn’t going to waste it.
