She didn’t know how long she had been asleep before the nightmares rolled in. But they were the worst nightmares she’d had in a long time. Maybe the worst she’d ever had. Everything was dim, and she had an odd feeling she was looking through another’s eyes. The nightmare was shattered into dark, painful fragments. She felt a raging pain in her leg, that made her hate being alive. Because in that moment, being alive meant pain. She could feel her eyes opening despite the major difficulty, and pain.
"Why hello- ready- two?" The chilling voice was broken up, like it was on the other side of a call that had terrible reception. She couldn’t tell who the voice was, but  they were painstakingly familiar. The nightmare continued, fractured and barely coherent. But next thing she knew she could see a silver glint in the corner of her eye. The figure, the one that was talking earlier, was on top of her in one swift movement. The glint followed their hand, and it occurred to her; They were holding a shamkniv. The weapon known for the scars it always leaves. Before she could react, the figure began slicing at her.  Several times on her arms, a few on her legs, but on particularly painful one running across her right eye. She could hear screams, but they felt weird. She felt them coming from her, but she knew she was staying silent. She knew whoever this dream, this fractured memory belonged to, was not her. But that didn’t stop the panic from rising in her chest, or from feeling the pain as a the blade dug into her skin.
She shot upright, tears rolling down her cheeks. She hugged her knees close to her and pulled her sheets around her, trying not to wake the other girls with her crying.
"Sophie?" Asked a soft voice from the doorway. She looked up from her blankets, and felt a wide array of emotions fill her.
"Fitz?" Sophie whispered back, her voice breaking.
"Hey, what’s wrong?" He had a confused and concerned expression on his face as he slowly made his way over to her.
"I...did I wake you up?" She asked as he sat next to her and gently placed a hand on her back, beginning to trace slow and soothing circles along her spine
"You transmitted to me, and when I got here you were crying." He kept his voice hushed so he wouldn’t wake the other girls.
She didn’t remember transmitting, but she still nodded. “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Fitz’s tone was somehow both commanding and calming."You’re still shaking," he said, any authority that had been in his voice disappeared and was released with worry. His eyebrows scrunched together in concern, and she felt more tears well in her eyes. "Sophie, would you tell me what happened?”  She stayed silent, not trusting her voice. “Please?" No answer. He sighed and gently laid her back into the bed, pulling the covers up to her shoulders. She grabbed his hand as he was about to stand and met his eyes, silently asking him not to leave her. After that nightmare, she didn’t want to be alone. He seemed to get the message, because he silently crawled into bed next to her, and she snuggled up closer to him. She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his chest, managing a sad smile when she felt him run his fingers through her hair.  "Are you okay?" He whispered softly, but his voice seemed choked with emotion.
"No." She said in the smallest voice, and he pulled her ever so slightly closer in response.
"What happened?"
"Nightmare." She managed to get out, feeling tears wet her cheeks again. "A really, really, bad nightmare."
"Oh, Soph-" He whispered, and she clung to him like he was the only thing keeping her together. She stayed silent for a while, still trying to hold back tears.
"Fitz?" She asked after a while.
"Yeah?" He said back, still running a hand through her hair.
"It hurts." She whimpered, burying her head further into his shoulder. She wanted to be strong, but at the moment that wasn’t possible. "It hurts so much." She choked out before beginning to silently sob again, her shoulder shaking under his grasp.
"It’s okay Sophie. I promise you’re okay." He comforted, or tried to. But she knew he was wrong. She could still feel the pain from the nightmare, from everywhere the shamkniv made contact. It hurt, even though it wasn’t her memory. But it wasn’t only the nightmare that was getting to her. It was everything catching up to her. All of her losses. All the mistakes. Everything that had happened over the course of her life in the Lost Cities. All the past battles. Losses. Deaths. She just cried harder, feeling Fitz use his free hand to trace down her back again. "Hey, everything is going to be fine. I promise." He tried to reassure her, but her shoulders continued shaking as she sobbed. "It’s alright. Just listen to my voice, okay?" He kept talking, about nothing in particular, just talking. Giving her something to focus on other then the pain. She slowly got her breaths to even out, and she could finally focus on him. "It’s alright Sophie. I’m right here. You’re safe. You can sleep now," he promised. And eventually, she believed him. So she fell asleep, safely wrapped in his arms.
