What aren’t you telling us? She transmitted to Tam.

“Is it really that obvious?” He shadow-whispered back.

Yeah. It is. Please tell me, you have nothing to lose.

“I guess not… but no matter what you can’t tell Linh.”

I promise.

“Ok. Last night, the noises, they were Gethen.”

Are you sure?

“No, I’m sure a dog could’ve transmitted to me. Yup, it was probably just a stray mutt.”

Not. Funny.

“Yeah, I guess this isn’t the best time for sarcasm.”

You got that right. But, in full honesty, are you sure it was Gethen?

“Positive. He transmitted ‘Hello Tam, we will still come for you.’ Then the weird stuff happened and I lost control.”

But you don’t know why you lost control?

“Not really. It felt like something...I don’t know how to describe it. It felt like something trying to protect me. I don’t know.”

Are you sure you're okay?

“Yeah. Just please don’t tell anyone.”

I have to tell Fitz. Otherwise the cognate stuff is down the drain.

“Fine. Just no one else okay?”

I promise. Now, I should probably go before they get any more suspicious.  Tam’s shadow retreated almost instantly and he gave her a subtle nod.

“So what was the secret telepathic conversation all about?” Biana whispered to Sophie after she had come and leaned against the wall next to her. Sophie tried to act like Biana  was far wrong but in turn Biana just shook her head. “My dad and brother are both telepaths, I know how to tell when someone is transmitting.”

“Tam made me promise not to tell anybody.” Sophie replied. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. I understand.” Biana smiled back, making the apologetic sadness in Sophie flee.

“Livvy?” Wylie asked, making Livvy turn away from her conversation with Elwin. “Would it be okay if I stayed here? I thought Tam and I could train with our abilities, I had a few new ideas. That won’t set back his recovery, right?”

“It shouldn’t. Just so long as you only use your powers. And promise not to fight us when Elwin or I say it’s time for a break.” She agreed.

“Deal.” Tam and Wylie promised in unison.

“I guess that’s our exit.” Sophie smiled.

“I suppose so.” Elwin laughed back. Sophie and Biana made their way over to the door, and just before Sophie followed Biana into the hallway Tam called her name.

“Hey, Sophie? Could you tell Marella thanks for the Prattles?” He asked.

“Of course. See you guys later.” She responded and joined Biana on the other side of the door and the two set off down the long hallway for the front door.

“Now do we go our separate ways?” Biana asked once they were outside.  “Or would you rather come over and have dinner with us at Everglen?”

“Dinner sounds tempting…” Sophie admitted. “I’ll have to ask. I kinda left without telling Sandor, so as long as he is not wanting to trap me in my room for the next hundred years we’ll be all good.” So Sophie hailed Grady and as it turned out, Sandor didn’t want to lock her in her room for one hundred years. He wanted to lock her up for one thousand. After a lot of convincing Sophie finally convinced Sandor to have Tarina met her at Everglen and come home after dinner.

By the time Sophie and Biana glittered onto Everglen’s property, Tarina was already there. She was about as happy with Sophie as Sandor had been.

“I would suggest checking your pillow before you go to sleep for a while.” She threatened, but she followed the two into Everglen as if nothing was different.

“I’m gonna go met up with Fitz. There are a few things I think he ought to know.” Sophie waited for Biana to nod before she set off to Fitz’s room By now the path was as familiar as the pastures of Havenfield, that was completely due to the fact that Sophie had spent a week walking it. Back when they were waiting for Tam to wake up. Sophie was so lost in thought she nearly walked right past his door. She stopped mid step directly in front of it.
