"Fitz?" She called beginning to look around for him. Where would he even go? It’s not like he knew the property. It was easy for someone to get lost if they didn’t know their way around. She was pulled out of her thoughts as she rounded the corner of the panakes tree, only to be tackled by something. At first she didn’t know what it was, it had moved too fast, but when she opened her eyes again she recognized his smile almost instantly.
"Yes Sophie?" Fitz asked, grinning while still leaning on top of her from the fall. She rolled her eyes and playfully shoved him off. He rolled into the grass next to her and faked a hurt expression, that dissolved pretty quickly when she scooted closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around her and they looked up at the sky together. She turned her head up and met his eyes, getting completely lost in them. She could have stared into his eyes for hours, and would have if it weren't for Keefe chasing Biana past them while screaming:
"NO FAIR! YOU CHEATED!" He followed closely behind Biana, before she vanished.
"How so? We never said special abilities weren’t allowed." Her voice had a teasing tone, and she appeared again several yeard away from Keefe. Sophie and Fitz had sat up by now, watching the others and trying not to laugh. Keefe then turned to the two of them.
"You two are supposed to be the refs right? So, TELL HER SHE CHEATED!" Keefe said pointedly at them. She and Fitz exchanged a look, and she simply shrugged.
"She’s not wrong. You never said anything about special abilities. So, technically, she didn’t cheat." Keefe stared at her with his mouth hanging open. The four shared a confused glance at each other and then broke down laughing.
"Alright fine, she didn’t cheat. But I demand a rematch! This time, my team is questing!" Keefe demanded while walked back to his teams. Biana rolled her eyes and followed Keefe, working on restarting the game.
"We should probably, you know, do our job and reff this round. Huh?" Fitz asked. Sophie simply nodded back and they went over to join their friends, but her mind strayed back to the panakes tree. To the moment before they were interrupted. She hadn’t realized it then, but before Keefe and Biana started yelling she was leaning in, and Fitz was too.
She snapped herself out of her thoughts, and did her duty as the ref for the other round of the game. They continued playing until it got dark, then everyone headed back inside to eat dinner. Waiting for them on the table were 8 bowls of a blue 'glop, but Sophie had learned long ago elvin foods tasted better then they looked. She took her seat and helped herself to a large spoonful of the, whatever you’d call it. She was surprised to find it to be warm and creamy, it reminded her of the soup her human mom would made her every year for her birthday. Cheesy Potato Soup, with assorted vegetables and chunks of ham. Except this version tasted better somehow, of course it did. It was elvin after all. Everything was better if it was elvin.
After dinner, everyone agreed that they just wanted to go to bed. They had been completely drained from playing Base Quest, and even Sophie had to admit that it had been the most intense game she’d ever seen. Man did they get competitive. A few people had to change into different clothes by the end of it. But that’s a story for a different time. The boys peeled off to their room and the girls followed Sophie up to her room, each curling up in their bedding. She fell asleep pretty quickly for her, and for the first time in a long time, she didn’t need the lullaby to allow her to drift off to sleep. Instead she fell asleep to the memory of her and Fitz by the panakes tree, smiling as she closed her eyes. Sadly, however, that blissful sleep did not last long.
