"Alright, lads, we have to go that way, through the woods." said Richard pointing at a small path swirling between the tall trees of the woods.
"Is everything okay?" I heard Liam asking Theo. "Yeah, everything's fine. I'm just a bit scared of the woods." she said visibly frightened. "I'm here with you. You'll be just fine." he said squeezing her shoulders as he was standing behind her. Theo was everything that Liam had and it was obvious how much he loved her, though he never had the courage to tell her.
The path led into a complete darkness like death and hell were at the end of it. I lit up my flashlight and raised my gun. I was ready to shoot anything that came in front of me. I had to stay focused even though it was hard. My mind was all over the place: Freya and Reece at home, Lexi wondering why I haven't visited her in days and what was happening in that exact moment. I had to concentrate on the least.
After following the twisted path we finally reached a huge clearing. A grey, damaged building was standing tall in the middle of it: the old wine factory. This place used to serve as a job for half of our town back when our parents were teenagers and now, it's a hiding place for criminals. In a town like ours, crime is something that everyone is used to. No one is surprised if they hear gunshots outside their windows anymore. This whole battlefront in which our hometown has turned into it's all our damned society's fault... but we are the society. We did this to our own home. It had to change but what we were doing in that exact moment wasn't going to help in any way. Too bad I was blinded by my hunger for revenge to realise that earlier.
"Alright. This is the spot." whispered Richard. "I suppose Adrian is hiding somewhere inside." he added.
"He's definitely here. That's his car." I said pointing to his old Mercedes that was parked in front of the factory.
"What do we do now?" asked Scarlet.
"We go inside." I said with my eyes still stuck on the entrance.
The place looked abandoned, like no one has been there for ages. Gangs loved hiding in places like these, away from the eyes of the ordinary men. None of us would've expected this place to actually be guarded until we made five steps into that bloody clearing. Loud sounds alike those of the spotlights of a stage filled the air. Big light sources switched on all around the building.
"Run, everybody!" I yelled as I ran searching for a place to hide.
"Going somewhere?" I heard a voice saying behind me as I felt somebody grabbing my shirt and throwing me to the ground.
"Shit!" I said under my breath as I hit the ground. Adrian was waiting for us. Smart bastard. While trying to stand up I grabbed one of my mini guns and pointed at him. As I was standing up I realised that his men caught my friends. They were all having a hand around their necks and a gun pointed at their heads. Adrian raised his hands while I was still having my gun out in front of him. My hand was shaking on the trigger and my eyes kept going from one friend to the other.Richard... Nicole... Scarlet... Theo... Liam. All of them lined up in front of me with their lives at stake.
"Shoot me and your friends are gone, Richardson. You really didn't think this one through, did you?" he said mockingly. For once I was weak in front of him. For the first time he had control over my actions. Control that my selfish ass gave to him. A small tear rolled down my cheek as the thought that the murdered that took my parents away from me had me wrapped around his finger.
"Why...Why did you kill my parents?" I asked him through tears as my hand was shaking on the gun. "Why did you do that?" I shouted in his face.
"You see, Blake, we all have jobs to do. We all get hired to do things. It's the little things we do for a living." he said.
"You don't take lives for a living, you bastard!" I yelled.
"I got hired to do it!" he said as he got closer to me faster than my eyes could process. "Did you think I wanted to do that? Do you think I chose to do it? Do you think I enjoyed it?" he said as he grabbed my neck. " I did what I had to do to maintain a family!" he added as he let go of me. "I never intended in ruining a kid's life but I did what I had to do to survive. I know you won't feel sorry for me and you have the right to do so." he said turning his back and walking away. "But look at you! You are just like me in this moment. Willing to kill for what? Revenge? Is this how your parents would want you to honour their memory?" he said turning on his heels.
I took a slight look to my left to find Scarlet looking at me. She had a plan. I blinked in approval and she acted.
"It is what my father would've wanted me to do." I said for myself as I watched my people free themselves of Adrian's men. They all managed to put their guns to those assholes heads as I kept pointing mine at Adrian.
"Look at how the tables have turned!" I said full of myself.
I heard a rustling behind me but I was to slow to realise. Adrian has people hiding in the woods and one of them pulled out a shiny silver gun and fired in Theo's direction. Before I could turn my head to see what was happening, Liam had already jumped in front of her, catching the bullet.
