"mommy!" ian yells from his seat at the dining table, a spoon in his hand as he thrashes around while crying loudly.

"david, that's you're child." astoria glances at david before quickly looking back at her cell phone.

"okay, first of all, who told you that you could call me david?" he questions and lifts the small child from his seat, ian's eyes wide and full of tears as his curly hair bounced around.

"no, i want mommy." he sobs loudly causing layla to glance the small boy who continues to thrash in david's arms.

"gez." malcom gives ian the side eye from his place beside layla at thebench at the side of the large room. "calm down." he gives his brother a dirty look and his tiny hand squeezes laylas tightly.

"it's okay, i can carry both babies." layla scoops malcom up and makes her way to david, grabbing ian in her other arm before running towards the living room making a plane noise.

"don't call me david." david scrunches his nose up in disgust at the name that both girls have been using all too often for his liking.

"sorry, dad." astorias tone is sarcastic and she continues scrolling though instagram.

"dad," maria begins from her place next to astoria at the table. "can i go to analeases party tonight?" she asks in a hopeful tone, a smile wide across her face as she grips her cellphone tightly.

a scoff comes from astoria and she rolls her eyes, shoving a peanut into her mouth and chewing it aggressively. "and what is your problem, baby?" he asks.

astoria gives him a weird look before copying her sister and burying her face in her phone. "okay, something is clearly going on." david mutters. he raises from his place quickly and snatched the phones from both girls hands.

"what the fuck david?" maria snaps her head quickly to stare david down.

"hey!" layla enters the room in an instant. "do not talk to your father like that." she shakes her head quickly and makes her way to stand beside david, her hands on her hips as she looks between the two girls.

"you know what," maria stands quickly, her eyes narrowed as she stares at the couple. "you're not my mother. you cannot tell me what to do."

"go to your room." david says before maria can say anything else. "no phone for a week and you're sure as hell not going to some party. not tonight, not any night."

"dad!" she screeches and let's out a frustrated grunt before stomping off towards her room leaving the three to stand awkwardly in the dining room.

"now, what is your problem?" david turns to astoria who sits with her hands in her lap.

"i don't have a problem." she replies simply as she stands slowly.

"what's your sisters problem?" he lifts an eyebrow.

"her moms birthday is in a week." she fiddles with her fingers and looks between the two. "mom, she doesn't mean it when she talks to you like that." astoria gives her mother a sad look, making her way to her side.

layla shrugs slightly, the tears being harder to hold back then she thought they'd be. "it's fine. don't worry about it." she smiles at her daughter and places a kiss on her forehead.

astoria makes her way out of the room quickly, leaving the couple alone. "i'm sorry." david places his arms around her and pulls her to his side. "you're her mother. and she knows that and loves you."

"i know." layla shoves her face into david's shirt and takes in the scent she's become so accustomed to. "i'm sorry."

"why are you apologizing?" he questions and lifts an eyebrow in confusion. "don't apologize for anyone else's actions and don't apologize for your feelings." david shakes his head and wraps his arms tightly around layla.

it wasn't a secret that layla has been more emotional lately, and everyone worked pretty hard to tiptoe around her feelings. not because she's weak, but because her feelings were more important to them then their own. to everyone around her layla's a gift from god. everyone, especially david, knew that without her they'd have dull boring lives. maria wouldn't have a mother and astoria wouldn't exist.

as maria got older and craved more independence from her parents she began acting out more. this was now the third time that she's used the 'you're not my mother.' excuse.

"i'll talk to her." layla places a kiss on david's lips before he nods and makes his way to the living room where the two boys sat giggling with each other.

"knock knock." layla says before shoving the door to maria's room open.

"go away. please." she cries into her pillow, her body shaking with every sob.

"no. we're gonna talk about this." layla takes a seat beside her on her bed and places a hand on her shoulder. "what's going on?" she questions in a gentle tone.

"no. i can't tell you." she shoves her arm away. "you'll be upset with me. and so will dad."

"maria," she begins. "me and your father, were here for you through everything. it might seem like we're the enemies sometime, but we love you and all that we want is to see you happy. whatever's going on, we can go through it together."

she nods and sniffles, turning slowly to face layla. "mom, i'm pregnant."
