"I'm leaving in two days." David says and glances at me from where he's sitting next to me on the couch and then turns his attention back to his cellphone.
I grab the remote and press pause, the current episode of Empire stops playing on the gigantic flat screen. "Where?" I ask and he sighs deeply, obviously not excited about going.
"We're going to Chicago." He says in a bored tone as if continuing the conversation was the last thing he wanted to do.
Maria begins fussing in my arms while she sleeps and I rock her gently, and watch as her eyes close again. "It's okay, I can handle it, David. I promise."
"Yeah, I know." I turn to him and we momentarily make eye contact. "I haven't left her in three months. Not since I got her." His hands reach towards Maria and I place her in his arms and watch as he holds her close. "My little baby." He says and places a kiss on her forehead, an action that he does often and seems to calm him.
"For how long?" I question anxiously.
I wasn't excited about being home alone or having Maria nights, David handled her best then. And it was clear that David hates the though of leaving Maria for more than work hours, he's attached to her.
"Two days." I nod. "Well, you can always FaceTime her, and two days isn't even that long."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." His thumb brushes over her cheek. "Is there anything you need?"
"No, I'm fine." He nods and turns his attention back to the tv, using the phone to start the show again.
A few hours pass, me and David make it through a few episodes of Empire. It didn't exactly make sense to me, but David absolutely adores the show. Personally I think he just thinks cookies hot.
Knock knock knock. "Who the hell is knocking on the door at 11 at night?" I question and look at David who lays on his back on the floor next to Maria, who is laying next to him fumbling a toy.
"Why don't you go find out?" He rolls his eyes at me and I flip him off and make my way to the large door, David's dumbass attitude making me angry.
I pull the door open to see Liza Koshy and a girl with dirty blonde hair and a very impressive jawline standing before me. "Uh, Who are you?" Liza asks and I furrow my eyebrows.
"What are you doing at my house at 11 at night?" I counter, not understanding why she's here if her and David broke up and David didn't seem very excited when she was mentioned.
"Your house?" Liza shoves last me in a rude manner, her friend offering me a smile and wave before quickly following behind Liza. "David!" She yells. "David, who is this?" She places a hand on her hip and stands in the large opening that is the entrance to the living room.
I ask my way down the two small steps and sit back down on the couch, not feeling the need to engage in this conversation. "Why?" David doesn't move from his place on the floor but stares over at the two girls. "We're not together. No room for jealously." He lifts an eyebrow.
"David!" Liza exclaims and throws a pillow at him.
"Calm down, she's my new live-in nanny. She's claiming Maria." Liza nods and the two girls sit beside me making me feel slightly awkward.
"Sorry if I seemed rude earlier." Liza apologizes and I can't tell if it's sincere or not, but I decide to ignore it since David didn't need anymore problems with her. "That's totally my bad." I nod in agreement, her statement being completely true.
"Yeah." I say simply and David rolls his eyes at Liza and sits up, placing the baby in his lap.
"Liza, Layla. Layla, Liza. Liza, Kristen. Kristen Liza. Kristen, Layla. Layla, Kristen." David drags out the introduction with a smirk on his face.
"I think we get it, asshole." I say and he raises his hands in defense.
"Calm down, sweetheart." I flip him off once again and Liza's eyes widen.
"David!" She screeches and looks between the two of us quickly.
"What do I owe the pleasure of you two lovely, lovely woman entering my house so late at night?" He says in a sarcastic tone of voice.
"I just wanted to see how you're doing." Liza says in a slightly hurt tone of voice, sitting up a little straighter. "You haven't answered my texts."
Maria increasingly fusses and David bounces her trying to calm her but it doesn't work. "Can I?" Liza reaches towards Maria, but David pulls her away from liza and stares me dead in my eyes.
"Layla will take her." I nod and take the fussing baby from his arms. "I love you princess, sleep well." He kisses her forehead and Liza and Kristen watch him with a indescribable look on their faces, as if they don't believe what they're seeing.
"Do you wanna hang out sometime?" Liza asks before I can exit the room causing me to pause in my place and slowly turn to the pair.
"What?" Before anyone can answer David is on his feet and at my side quickly.
"No." He says and crosses his arms. "She's not."
"You're not her boss, David." Kristen says in a matter of factly tone. But, David technically is my boss.
The two girls seemed to be very different than they were on camera. Every video I've ever seen of Liza has made her seem very kind and caring, but she seemed to be the exact opposite right now
"Just leave her alone." He sighs deeply. "Can you two leave now?" He motions to the door.
"David, we need to talk." Liza says and makes her way to him. "Like, privately."
"No, Liza, I'm telling you to leave. I'm not asking anymore." She nod and holds her hands up on defense. "Now."
"David, I'm leaving." She gives me a once over before walking to the door. "Were having dinner tomorrow?" I look between the two and try to tell if she telling the truth but from the look on David's face I highly doubt it.
"You invited yourself to my dinner with the boys, so I guess I can't stop you from showing up." She nods with a smile on her face.
David stands beside me as the two girls make their way out of the house. "Bye lay!" Kristen smiles brightly at me before closing the door.
"What was that about?" I follow David up the stairs and he rubs his temples, how stressed he is being very obvious.
"Liza, is very stressful." He stares at Maria, who lays in my arms and her soft cry continues to ring out. "Did you want to come to dinner tomorrow? It's kinda a fancy thing, to celebrate the tour. And for the boys to see Maria, which they never make time for. Then they're having a party, if you want to go to that."
"Party's aren't really my thing." He nods understandingly and leans against the wall beside me, the tiredness on his face showing.
"I only want to go for a few minutes anyways to talk to Alex about some things. It would be a good opportunity for you to meet the boys." I nod and think it over for a moment.
"My mom could watch her for an hour or so I guess. My parents are already attached to the idea of a granddaughter." He smiles at my words, probably glad that she'll have her someone to claim as her grandparents while her real ones are so far away, both David's and her mothers.
"I guess this isn't a normal nanny job, is it?" He chuckles. "I think it's important we form a friendship if were going to be sorta co-parenting." I nod, completely agreeing.
Maria doesn't need two parents who hate each other. That's probably the worst thing that could happen to the poor girl.
"Uh, Yeah. That'll work. Gives me an opportunity to actually wear the dresses I bought." He smiles and chuckles, making a small smile appear on my face.
He reaches over and takes the baby out of my arms. "Goodnight Layla." I watch as he disappears down the hallway.
