"Lacey!" somebody shouts, pounding at my bedroom door.

"Uhh what?" I mutter confused. I look over at my alarm clock. It reads seven am.

"What do you want?!" I groan. If there's something I hate, it's getting woken up way too early. Especially during the summer break.

"There's somebody here that wants to see you," dad says, sounding happy about it.

"It's seven am! Who could possibly want to see me..."

"Sorry Mr. Miller, I should have waited a little longer before coming over."

That voice.

"Georgi?!" I rush to my door and open it.

"Hi," she says grinning widely at me. I crush her in a bear hug while laughing.

"You weren't supposed to come home yet!" I exclaim and let go of her. She is wearing a blue summer dress and her brown hair is hanging loosely around her shoulders.

"I convinced my dad to take us home earlier so that I could spend some time with you," she says, still smiling.

My best friend Georgina Owens, although everyone except her mom calls her Georgi, has been in Florida with her family for a month now and wasn't supposed to come home until Sunday.

"I'll leave you guys alone," dad says smiling at us. He walks away and I drag Georgi into my room.

"You can't imagine how boring my summer has been without you," I groan. We sit down on my unmade bed.

"Didn't you hang out with Traci and Kimberly?" she asks.

I shrug. "Traci has been spending all her time with Boston, and I didn't exactly want to be the third wheel. I did go to a few museums with Kimberly but it quickly got very boring."

Georgi laughs and her eyes light up. "I can understand that." At first you might think that her eyes are blue, but when you look closer you can see that one of her eyes is actually greener than the other.

"But tell you what? We still have three whole days until school begins on Monday, so that's plenty of time to make your summer successful," she offers.

I give her a small smile. "Are you sure?"

"Of course! And we don't have any time to waste so get dressed and let's go!" she says. "And do something about that hair of yours, it looks like you just woke up."

"I did just wake up! And it doesn't look that bad," I shoot back laughing, but when I look into my mirror I see that she's right. My red, normally wavy, hair is so messy that it looks like a flash of lightning has hit me.

About ten minutes later I am ready to go. I have put on a pair of white shorts and a blue t-shirt and I also braided my hair. My eyes are lined with some eyeliner that makes my brown eyes look bigger.

"Okay let's go," I say.

We walk out of the apartment and down the stairs to my dad's café. It's a smaller, cozier café with brown tables and black chairs. The decorations are green and the walls are filled with some of dad's favourite paintings. Most of the time he runs the café all by himself but on busy days I help him.

"Do you girls want some freshly baked donuts?" he asks and shows us a plate filled with chocolate donuts. A few strands of his black hair hangs in front of his eyes.

"I could never say no to that," Georgi says and takes one. I grab one too and then we head out the door. Our neighbourhood isn't very big but it's definitely pleasant. We know most of the people that live here and crime is pretty much nonexistent. Georgi lives about ten minutes from here and Traci and Kimberly both live in wealthier areas, if you can call it that.

"So what do you want to start with?" she asks. "We could go shopping, to the amusement park, to the cinema... "

"I want to do all of those things," I interrupt her, "but I've been wanting to go to the lake for so long now."

"Then that's where we're going!" she says happily and starts walking.

"We're walking?" I ask, my voice uncertain.

"Duh, the sun is going to shine for the whole day!" she says and does a little pirouette.

"Yeah but I just got my drivers license!" I argue.

"Ah fine, we'll go by car, but only because I'm such an amazing friend," she says and we hop into the car.

"So I met this really cute guy in Florida. He was about six feet tall and had gorgeous blue eyes..." I continue listening to her talking about all her adventures in Florida while not having anything special to tell her myself. It's not that I'm a boring person, it's just that I haven't had anyone to do fun stuff with. Georgi is the one that comes up with the best ideas and it's been that way ever since kindergarten.

I did spend some of my summer helping my dad with his café. It was fun to help him bake everything but after a while he got tired of me messing up in the kitchen. Then I started reading some books that Kimberly got me for my birthday, but they were all about history and stuff that I'm really not interested in. I also spent a lot of time running and working out, but I couldn't exactly do that all day.

"Oh we have to go to this ride before the amusement park closes," Georgi says and points to a blue roller coaster.

"Fine, but then I have to go home because my feet are killing me," I complain.

"Yeah sure!" she answers happily.

"That was so much fun! Everybody was screaming like crazy," Georgi laughs.

I think I might throw up.

Georgi notices that I'm not okay and puts her arm around me. "Okay maybe it wasn't such a good ride after all. Let's get you home so you can get some sleep."

We spend the car ride listening to Georgi's favourite playlist. She has millions of them. Name any category and I bet she has a playlist for that.

"Are you excited about school?" she asks me.

I grimace. "Not really. I look forward to biology, and P.E. I guess, but otherwise I'm not excited at all."

"Really? I've heard people say that junior year is the best of them all! What about seeing Liam?" she asks. I stop the car since we've now reached my house.

"No. I mean he's hot and all and he definitely knows how to play football, but he would never notice me," I explain and give her a half smile. We get out of the car and walk to the front door.

"Don't be silly Lacey, Everyone notices your red hair," she laughs and smiles at me. Her comment makes me crack up too.

"Well either way, I heard he hooked up with Rachel this summer."

"Okay, but name one guy in our school that hasn't," she challenges.

"True, but still, I'm not interested anymore," I say and glance at her meaningfully. She looks back at me with suspicious eyes.

"Okay, okay, I won't talk about him anymore. I'll see you tomorrow?" she smiles.

"Of course," I say and give her a hug.

I walk into the café and give my dad a quick kiss on his cheek before going up to our apartment. About half an hour later I'm laying in my bed, thinking about what might happen this school year.

It can't possibly be so much better than the precious ones, can it?
