A couple is leaning against a sky blue car. They are wrapped in each others arms. The guy whispers something in the girl's ear and she starts to giggle. The dude's face brighten up like he won a trophy. It doesn't take long until their lips meet. I grimace and look away.
Max better be here soon. I can't stand to be in the same space as passionated teenagers licking each other. The only thing that runs through my mind when I see happy couples like them is, of course, Lacey. I grimace again.
I scan our school's parking lot to find something, anything, to distract myself from my own thoughts. Most of the cars have already disappeared, which doesn't surprise me. Nobody wants to spend any extra time than necessary in school on a Wednesday afternoon.
I'm startled when I see the girl, who was in the middle of a makeout session just a second ago, heading towards me. I swear to god if she's going to evict me so that they could be alone.
She approaches me and sits down beside me on the bench. I take a better look at her. I regonzie her features, her eyes that are the same brown color as her hair, but I can't quite place where I've seen her.
"Hi," she greets me with a smile which makes her aperture between her front teeth show.
"Um, hey." I glance over her shoulder to figure out what the dude thinks about this. To my surprise I actually know him. Gunnar McFarland. We've had some classes together in the past. He's also in the football team with Liam.
I look at his face. He watches us. No, correction, he watches his girlfriend with dreamy eyes. The sight makes me feel sick, again reminding me of what I can never have.
"Don't you remember me?" The girl asks, drawing my attention back to her. I open my mouth to assure her that of course I do, but I shut it as quickly as I opened it. Because I really don't have any idea who she is. Perhaps we have met at a party. Crap, what if I have made out with her and don't remember it?
"It's okay, I didn't expect you to." She chuckles. "I'm Elena. We met in the beginning of the school year at the beach. Max introduced us."
"Right," I mumble and search in my memorize for a picture of her. "You're the senior."
"Yes I am." She looks at me amused.
"What's up?" I straighten my back.
"Just wanted to check on you," Elena tells me and gives me a sympathetic gaze. "Isabelle told me all about homecoming."
I lift an eyebrow at her. Does she think I give a shit about Isabelle or anything that has to do with her.
"I'm fine," I say, although I'm not even near to being fine. The thought of Lacey is killing me.
"I'm happy to hear that. I know Isabelle can sometimes be, um, be a... bitch," Elena announces, lowering her voice at the end of the sentence.
"You don't say." I let out a laugh. "She's definitely a manipulative bitch."
Elena doesn't say anything to my statement. But even though she doesn't want to admit it, I can see in her eyes that she agrees with me.
The glassdoor behind us makes a noise as it shuts close. My head snaps away from Elena to the stairs in front of the door. Max sees me and waves.
"Well, I better get back to Gunnar." Elena stands up and I follow her action. "It was nice talking to you."
"Yeah, see you around."
Elena smiles before turning away and heading back to her boyfriend.
Max steps into my view and gives me a questioning look which I return.
"Why were you talking to Elena?" Max studies my face and tilts his head.
"None of your business," I spit out and start making my way to Max's Audi. Max rolls his eyes but follows me.
"What took you so long in there?" I ask him, gesturing to the school building. Max blushes as he fastens his seatbelt. My chin drops. "I've literally waited here for fucking 15 minutes while you've been in there doing god knows what with Georgi."
"Don't be so dramatic." He gives me a glare. "You would be doing the same thing if you weren't such a pussy and pushed the only person you care about away."
"Idiot," I mutter and turn my gaze to the window.

The tension at home is exhausting. My mom's staying at the nearest hotel. She had said to Jonathan that she isn't going to leave the town before we hear her out. Breaking the news to Dad was the first thing Jonathan did when dad came home from his business trip. Jonathan had decided it would be best to tell him in person. Dad didn't take it well. He has spent the last three days in his bedroom.
I sigh as I open the door to Jonathan's room. The green curtains are shadowing the room. A white fluffy mat cover the floor. Not a single piece of clothing is to be seen. All books are stacked on the bookshelf alphabetically.
Jonathan has headphones on, sitting by his desk playing a war game. He doesn't flinch or even look my way when I enter the room, he's too into the game.
I clear my throat, loudly, to capture his attention. Jonathan jumps up from his gaming chair. His eyes narrow in the sight of me. He drags his right hand over his face before sitting back down onto his black chair with green stripes.
"What do you want?" he questions with a flat tone, keeping his eyes on his closet behind me.
"What are we gonna do with mom?"
"Don't know, don't care."
"C'mon Jonathan. You're the wise one of us," I say and shake my head in disbelief. I know he's still angry with me but this is beyond our fight.
"That's funny coming from you." Jonathan lifts his head to meet my eyes. "You never listen to me or do like I suggest. I'm just the annoying little brother."
I close my eyes and exhale. I can't lose my shit right now. Keep it together Alex. Be the older brother. Prove you're worth the title.
"I'm gonna invite her over," I announce which makes Jonathan's mouth open. "I think it would be best if dad talked to her first. I'll be out on Friday so I thought it would be the perfect time for them to solve this alone. You need to help me get dad out of bed before then, got it?"
Jonathan just stares and blinks at me for a minute.
"Yeah okay," he says at last.
"Good," I state and walk out of the way too clean room.
