I find myself getting easily distracted the following days. I can't seem to make up my mind about everything.
Everything being Alex.
All this time I've been convincing myself that we're just friends, but I'm not sure I want to be 'just friends' anymore.
"Hey! Hands off my lunch!" Georgi snaps and draws my attention back to reality. The loud noise of the school cafeteria surfaces again and I realise that I'm reaching for one of her fries.
"Whoops, sorry," I mumble with a small smile playing on my lips. Georgi narrows her eyes at me.
"What are you thinking about?" Kimberly asks curiously. Her long brown hair is braided and she's twirling one of the braids around her finger.
"Noth-"
"Is it Alex?" Georgi interrupts me. "You might as well share your thoughts. You have to tell us about everything eventually." Kimberly nods in agreement.
I sigh heavily and use my fork to play around with my salad. "I will, but I would prefer to do it in private."
"Excuses, excuses," Georgi says and shakes her head.
"All you have to know for now is that nothing happened between us," I explain as I give her a serious look.
"Really? That's not what it sounded like on the phone," Georgi smirks at me.
I roll my eyes. "He was just joking around."
"Well, if you say so... " she trails off. Kimberly shakes her head at the both of us.
I stand up from my chair and swing my bag over my shoulder. "I have to go freshen up a bit. I'll see you later."
I leave my friends in the cafeteria and make my way to the bathroom. The corridors are filled with teenagers chatting with each other. I get a few looks here and there, though I'm not sure why. Usually people don't find me interesting.
I turn right and almost choke at the sight in front of me.
It's Boston. Kissing another girl.
My fingernails dig into my palms and I clench my jaw. Boston and the girl must sense me glaring at them because they let go of each other. My eyes find Boston's and he smirks.
That son of a bitch smirks at me.
"You disgust me," I spit and give him a murderous look.
The blonde girl next to him raises her eyebrows. She appears to be younger than him. She might be sophomore or maybe even a freshman.
"You think I care about your opinions?" he asks with a mocking tone.
I've never actually seen him like this before, but now that I have I feel like a fool. How have I not realised what he's like?
"Just wait until I tell Traci about this," I threaten him.
He crosses his arms and lifts his chin. "And what? She won't believe you, she's in love with me." His confidence annoys me to say the least. I just wish that what he was saying wasn't true.
I glance at the girl beside him. She looks confused. Maybe she doesn't know that he has a girlfriend. I turn my gaze back at Boston again. "She will find out eventually, whether she chooses to believe me or not."
"She will never find out," he argues.
"I think she just did," says a voice from behind me.
Boston's eyes go wide and he steps away from the girl who looks just as shocked.
I turn around to see Traci standing there, staring at Boston.
"Traci, I was just looking for you-" he begins.
"Don't even try Boston." Traci's eyes are watery and her lips are set in a strait line.
"This," Boston motions with his hands, "is not what it looks like." I roll my eyes at his poor attempt to rationalize.
"Oh really? Why did you kiss her then?" Traci asks. I can see that her tears are threatening to spill out.
"I... " Boston stops speaking. It finally seems like he has no idea of what to do.
"Yeah, I thought so." Traci's voice breaks at the end. She shakes her head like she's in disbelief and walks away.
I glare at Boston once more time before following her. She almost runs down the corridor so I have to hurry to keep up with her.
"Traci, wait!" I call out.
The students around me give us curious looks but I ignore them completely. They can think whatever they want to.
Traci doesn't stop in her tracks and exits the school. I don't care that our lesson is about to start soon and I rush after her.
"Traci!" I shout.
"What?" She finally stops hurrying away and faces me. Her cheeks are wet and some of her makeup is already smeared out around her eyes. My heart breaks at the sight.
"I don't need you to tell me that you were right all along," she adds.
"That's not what I was going to say," I whisper.
She studies my face quickly. "And I don't need your pity either."
"I just..." I bite my lip. I don't know what to tell her.
She takes a few deep breaths and rubs her eyes with her hands. It only smears out the makeup more, but I suppose she doesn't care about that now.
"I can't believe that I'm such an idiot," she mutters and more tears run down her face.
"You're not an idiot." I try to sound comforting. "Boston is, you were just in love."
She snorts and looks down at the ground. "And here I thought that he loved me too."
I take a few steps forward and embrace her in a hug. At first she doesn't do anything, she just lets me hug her, but then she puts her arms around me.
"What did I do to deserve this?"
I hug her tighter as she utters that sentence. "You did absolutely nothing wrong Traci. This is all on Boston."
I can't even begin to imagine what she feels like. To be completely in love with someone and then that person treats you like you're worthless.
"I'm sorry for not believing in you," she whispers.
"It's okay, you don't have to apologize." I say rubbing my hand across her back in a comforting motion. My feelings are a mix of sadness and anger. I feel like I could kill Boston for what he's done to Traci.
She lets go of me after a few seconds. "I'm gonna go home."
I take her hand and squeeze it tightly. "Do you want me to come with you?"
She shakes her head. "No, I think I want to be alone for now."
"Okay. Call me if you need anything," I say and she nods.
"Can you... can you maybe ask Kimberly to come over after school?" she asks carefully.
"Yeah, of course."
She pulls her hand away from mine and rubs it across her eyes again.
"I'll see you later," she mumbles before walking away.
