Charlotte ran into her mothers arms, giving her an over due hug. "I missed you so much," she whispered into her neck.
"Jesus guys, calm it down will you?" Conor asked with a laugh, closing the car boot and joining them at her front door.
This was the first time they had gotten a chance to visit their mom since they had gone to college. "Gosh, look at you, you're both looking so grown up!"
They both blushed, and Conor moved to walk pass his mother and get into the house, but she quickly placed her hand on his chest.
"Look, before you two go in there, there's something you should know."
Conor frowned at his mother, "Whats wrong mom? Did something happen?"
Charlotte stared in between them, although the voice that came to her ears a second later immediately brought tears into her eyes.
"Well, it's like a family reunion isn't it?" The voice of their father asked with a chuckle.
Charlotte immediately tensed up as Conor took a protective step in front of her, suddenly all of the flashbacks coming back to her, one in particular sticking out to her.
"No dad! Dad get the hell off of me!" She cried.
He angrily slammed his fist into her face, "You're such a fuck up, how could you not have been able to get a simple A huh? Are you really that fucking retarded?"
Charlotte felt tears burning her eyes as she trembled in front of him. "First you starve yourself and make us pay a shit load of money for you to get better, even though you're still a fat bitch! And now you're so damn dumb you got a 76 on a test!"
He kicked her in the stomach twice.
"What the hell are you doing?" An angry voice yelled.
Her father stared at Conor with anger, "What are you doing here?"
Conor rushed over to Charlotte's side, helping her up immediately. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, coughing loudly. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?" He yelled at his father.
His father shrugged, "She failed a test."
"A 76 isn't a fail! That's better than I got on most of my chem tests! You better get the fuck out of this house and never come back!"
They held a stare down before their father held up his hands in surrender, "Alright, I'll leave, but this won't be the last time you see me, you pieces of shit."
"Earth to Charlotte," Conor mumbled in her ear, gripping her waist.
"What are you doing here, Daniel?" He growled. Charlotte grabbed his hand and removed it from her waist, feeling his grip get tighter on her.
He looked at her apologetically before glaring at their father again. "What the hell is going on here mom?" He growled.
"You're father and I are.. we're seeing each other again."
"How could yo do this! After everything he did to us, everything he did to Charlotte!?"
Conor was now towering over his mother, his entire body tense. Daniel, their father, placed his hand on Conor's chest, pushing him back, but he quickly slapped his hand away, "Don't touch me you prick," he spat.
"Watch your tone with me mister."
Conor stood over Darren, "I told you to never come back here you piece of shit."
Her mother sighed gently as Charlotte stayed behind Conor, her body shaking like a leaf. "Look at what you two are doing to Charlotte, all of you get inside and calm down alright? We'll discuss this together like rational adults."
"To be fair mom, I don't think it's me that's making Charlotte react like that, ever think it's because you brought back the man who abused her for years!"
Their mom shushed him immediately and dragged him inside, slamming the door after the two of them made their way in. Charlotte say on the couch beside Conor, and Daniel sat beside her, making her move closer to Conor, who wrapped his arm around her waist.
"Why would you take him back?" Conor asked, staring at his mother, Sandra, accusingly.
She sighed and looked at the ground, before sitting on the table in front of them and crossing her legs, "He's changed, I promise you I wouldn't have brought him back if he was the same man he was a year ago."
Tears blurred Charlotte's eyes and she looked at her lap, trying to blink them away, but the man sitting beside her wasn't doing anything to help her racing heart and shaken hands.
Conor, noticing her shaking form pulled her even closer to him and gently rubbed her arm. She leaned into him, staying as far away from Daniel as she could he.
Daniel stood up, suddenly angry, "Look, I don't give a fuck about either of you two assholes, I am here for your mother."
"Daniel sit down."
He sat down upon their moms command and she turned to look at Charlotte, "You've been especially quiet through all of this darling, what's your opinion on it all?"
Charlotte sighed, "I think you fucked up mom."
Daniel angrily stood up again, "Don't
talk to your mom like that you fat bitch."He swung his fist at her and it landed firmly on her cheek, leaving a satisfying mark in her face. Conor stood up immediately. "I have wanted to do this for so long," he grumbled, cracking his knuckles.
He quickly punched him in the face, resulting in a loud cracking noise as Daniel fell and landed on the floor.
"Conor!" Their mother shrieked as she rushed over to Daniel's side.
Charlotte stood up and rushed into the kitchen, where she found an ice pack that she quickly held up to her throbbing cheek.
She could hear her mother yelling at Conor, who had apparently knocked Daniel unconscious.
Charlotte walked back into the living room and grabbed Conor's arm, "come on, let's just leave."
Conor wrapped his arm around her shoulders, gently pecking her temple, "How are you feeling?"
She frowned, "Like I just got punched in the face."
He rolled his eyes. "God, I forgot how hard his punches were," she groaned. He sighed and took her ice pack for a second, glancing at the already forming bruise.
"Hate to break it to you, but that's going to look ugly by the time we get back."
She shrugged as she sat in the car, "it's fine, I'll just make up some dumb story or something."
Conor frowned, "I'm not sure that's going to be very easy, the likes of Preston can tell where a bruise has come from and how long it's been there, he is planning on being a doctor."
Charlotte cursed under her breath, "Then you just back me up and tell him not to say anything."
He shrugged, "I won't have to say anything to him, he'll know you're lying and he's smart enough to know that there's a reason why."
As the car zoomed pass some trees she groaned, "But I'm not sure if you've noticed, we don't get along very well."
He glanced at her for a second, "Hey, ice on your face. And I don't care if you don't get along, he wouldn't say anything."
She rolled her eyes and leaned against the window, holding the ice pack to her throbbing cheek, "But still, what am I supposed to say happened?"
"You walked into a stop sign."
"That is not believable!" She scoffed.
"Well, you are incredibly clumsy."
"I'm not clumsy," she grumbled to herself. "And by the way way you walked into a stop sign two days ago."
She cursed at him in her head for reminding her of that event.
