Two weeks before Christmas, a time of happiness and love and comfort. It was the time of year when everyone was united, everyone was happy. People all tried to spread the cheer, all of them feeling the Christmas spirit.
Madness in shops and on streets, people scrambling to buy the best gifts before they all sold out, that was how it worked, like clock work every single year.
"What about these? They look fine, don't they?" Charlotte asked, holding up some tacky looking ornaments.
"I really don't care."
She glared at him. They hadn't spoken properly since she slapped him and all she seemed to want was to do it again.
"You could at least pretend you do. It's your apartment too," She pointed out.
He rolled his eyes and glared at her, "Do whatever the fuck you want."
He began to walk away and she scoffed.
"What?" He spat, turning so he was now towering over her.
She was suddenly very much aware of the fact that the shop was basically deserted, no one would pay attention to them.
"So, that's it. You just be nice to me while my brothers in a coma but once we know he's not dying you return to your usual asshole self?"
He shrugged, "Yeah, I guess so. I felt bad for you Charlotte. Did you think I actually liked you?"
She bit the inside of her cheek, not wanting to admit how much that had actually hurt her.
She had thought that their day on the beach meant something to him as it did to her, but she had realized now it was all made up in her head.
His hand gripped her forearm as she tried to walk away from him and she flinched at how rough he was being with her.
"Bring that stuff up to the cashier, I'll pay."
She rolled her eyes, "I wouldn't want you to pay out of pity."
He pushed her gently as he rolled his eyes.
She walked up to the cashier with a frown settled on her face until she noticed that there was a familiar boy sitting behind the cash register.
"Alfie, wow, it's been a while," she pointed out, giving him a happy smile.
He smirked as he scanned her decorations, "Yeah, I've been busy."
Alfie was one of her co workers, one of her favorite co workers. He was a young guy, probably about two years older than herself, so the same age as Conor. They got on great as they were the only two in their age group who worked in the supermarket.
"Well it's good to see you're back, work has been getting extremely dull without you around," She laughed.
He smirked, "Well then I'll be expecting you to be here this week."
She smiled gently, "I'll come in, just for you."
"Yeah, well then you sho-"
"Can you hurry this up please?" Thomas growled, appearing beside Charlotte.
Alfie raised his eyebrows but complied, knowing that he couldn't argue with a customer.
Charlotte moved away from Thomas with discomfort. She didn't want to be anywhere near him.
"Alright well, that'll be $58.46," Alfie mumbled, tapping away at the register.
Charlotte watched the awkward encounter, not liking that there was tension between everyone.
"I guess I'll see you on Wednesday," Charlotte stated as they packed up.
Alfies green eyes settled on her and he gave her a large smile, showing off his pearly whites, "I'm counting down the seconds."
Charlotte laughed gently as her and Thomas left the shop, him stayint quiet.
Once they arrived back at the apartment and no words had been spoken between them.
He had spent the whole drive angrily glaring at the road ahead of him, leaving an awkward silence in the car.
As soon as they walked into the apartment he banged the bag full of decorations onto the table, a loud crash sounding from it.
She flinched, staring at him with wide eyes.
"What the fuck?" She snapped, checking all of the ornaments to see they weren't broken, "We literally just bought these."
"I just bought these," He corrected gruffly.
She frowned at him, "Why so you have to be such a fucking asshole?"
He shrugged, "Why don't you just ask Alfie?"
She scoffed, "What? This is about Alfie now?"
He eyed her up and down, "So what if it is? I don't care if you want to flirt with him, go for it. I don't care."
She rolled her eyes at him, her irritation growing by the second, "I don't know what the hell your problem is but I'm so not putting up with it, not today."
"Putting up with what? Huh? I didn't fucking do anything you're just being ridiculous."
"I mean why are you being like this? So what if I was flirting with alfie!? You're my roommate, that's it. You don't even like me!"
He rolled his eyes, "That doesn't mean I want to see you throwing yourself at guys!"
"Then what the hell do you want!?" She exclaimed. She was exhausted. Fighting with him was draining her.
He sighed, exasperated. His mind was in a haze, he didn't know why he was so frustrated, but he knew that there was one thing he wanted to do.
"I want you to go."
"Where am I supposed to go? There's nowhere for me to go!"
He stared at her angrily, his eyes fixed on her distressed face.
"I don't want to see you. I don't want to talk to you. I don't even want to think about you. I want you out of my life!"
"That's kinda hard to do when we live together."
He clenched his jaw, staring at the table.
"Whatever."
She sighed, holding her stomach. She knew that all of this stress was definitely bad for the life that was forming in her womb.
He stared at her curiously, the anger slowly draining out of him the more he watched her.
"Why are you doing that?" He pryed.
She sighed and looked away, "I just have cramps."
"I just don't believe you," he mocked.
"What do you care!?"
"I don't..." he mumbled.
"I'm pregnant," She blurted out.
He looked at her in shock, his whole body freezing.
She had immediately regretted saying what she just had and she watched as he held his hands up to his head.
"Why does there always have to be something wrong with you?"
She stayed looking at her hands.
I don't know.
