Summary: Daniel and Corbyn cuddle in a hospital bed. The former making promises he can never keep
Daniel's POV
" Why am I here, Dani? I wanna go home," his plump lip pushed forward. Big, sweet blue gazing up at me through thick, dark lashes." You're sick, Baby. That's all, but the doctors are gonna make you better," his hair plush between my fingers, tickling my palm. My gentle smile strained, eyes stinging with each quick blink.
" We don't actually know what's wrong with him."
" Why are they taking so long?" His whine quiet, eyes fluttering as I kissed between them. Chuckling low, my breath hot against his face. Leaving pale skin burning.
" You're so impatient," unable to help the fondness of my whisper," why can't you just let them help you? Do you wanna be sick forever?"
" W-well... no, but I...", his bottom lip hiding between pristine teeth. Small hands tugging at the fabric of my shirt, twining it between his digits. The 6 year old not meeting my gaze, entranced instead by his own movements.
" But what, Princess?" My mouth traced the bridge of nose, kissing slowly along the ridge. Brilliant blue hunting endlessly, hoping to find the hidden frost-clad jewels.
" I-I... I don't like it here. You and Mommy and Daddy are always leaving and... and I have to sleep by myself," the pout of his lips never wavered. Gradually, hesitantly, meeting my searching gaze. Still playing absently with my t-shirt," I get scared and I have nightmares. And you aren't there to make it better."
My fingers trailing across soft, flushed planes, my smile subconscious. Adoring the way he leaned ever so into my touch," what if I stayed with you tonight? Would that make it better?" The tip of my nose brushing his, careful arms drawing him in. Insuring his wires didn't get caught.
" We don't think he'll make it through the night. His body appears to almost be shutting down. His organs have been failing one by one."
" Really?! You can do that?!" The twinkle of stars sudden, lighting up the cold blue skies. A wide grin stretching painted cheeks.
" Uhuh, I'll have to sneak though. Promise me you'll keep it secret?"
" I promise I will. I won't tell anyone."
" Good," I pressed a loving peck to his Cupid's bow. Fingers dipping gently into his hip, always cautious of his catheter. They had finally let me hold him, I wasn't gonna ruin it now.
The air around stilled. My ears studying his every breath. The wheeze from a few weeks ago growing worse with each day. Only now did I notice how light he was, barely a weight in my arms. How cold his skin was, each touch sending a shudder running down my spine.
My hand slipping between his shirt and belly. Palm mapping out the smooth, freezing land. Hoping the friction would help, even if only a little.
" Can we get ice-cream after I leave?" Question sudden, voice much softer.
" Why ice-cream?" My words fanning over his face, lips mere centimeters away. I needed him to know I was there. That it would all be okay.
" I don't know," he spoke quietly, honestly. Head tilting north, barely puckering up to me, offering his lips. I met him gently, letting our mouths brush with his next words," but can we? After I leave?"
" Is there any chance he could come home? Is there anything we can do?" My helpless plea cracking, eyes left searing from dripping tears.
