Sigh. This song was so hyped up. Everytime I went on Twitter to read one of the boys newest posts, the only thing in the comments were fans demanding 6/12. Personally, I didn't care when they released it, since it would obviously be before the month was over. But I do think it was a missed opportunity not to release their "summer song" on the official start of summer. Which is the 21st of June, by the way.
Anyway, like the sigh at the beginning may have suggested, I don't like it. All the hype this song got was ultimately its biggest down fall. It got my hopes up and it didn't deliver, not even close. I don't hate it as much as Unbelievable, I won't ever hate any of their songs that much, but it does have a few of the same problems. So, let's get started.
1. It's So Boring
My God, this song drags on. It's only 2 minutes, but it feels like it's 5. Which doesn't sound like much, but 5 minutes of bad music is torture. This song is not at all original, it's not creative. When they called it their "summer song", I expected cliche. I'm not saying summer songs can't be good because that would make me a liar, but I am saying I didn't expect anything new. After Unbelievable I didn't think we would get anything incredible, just something average. This song isn't average, it's awful. An average song would just make me shrug my shoulders and say," I don't love it, but I wouldn't mind hearing it again." Please don't ever show this song to me again.
2. The Beat
It's so soft. I listened to it with and without headphones and it isn't any louder. Is the version on YouTube just awful? Is it supposed to sound like that? This is their summer song. You know, a song you can dance to in the club? Bounce along with in the car on a road trip? How am I supposed to dance to a beat I can't hear? I'm not talking about the whole thing, the volume is perfect during the verses, but when the beat drops it gets significantly quieter. Also, there's a lot happening all at once, it kinda makes it hard to focus. But besides that, it doesn't sound half bad. It's what you would expect from a song like this. Nothing new, nothing interesting, just okay. Average.
3. The Lyrics
They're exactly what you expect, just worse. I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot when it comes to this song. It's so damn boring! I can't count how many other artists have done this same thing, the exact same way yet they still managed to do it better. I'm not even necessarily mad that this song is about lust, I don't hate the lyrics because they're lustful. I hate them because they're the exact same as all other lustful lyrics." We was up late to the daytime
She was movin' to the bassline (Hey!)
Big bubble, little waistline
Can't fit it all on the FaceTime"
If someone read me these lyrics I wouldn't be able to tell you who made it. I would have no idea which uninspired, honestly lazy, artist paraphrased someone's song.My other problem with the lyrics is they're lack of depth. When I googled the words to read them all at once, no beat, no voices. I saw a lot of websites "breaking down" the lyrics and I couldn't figure out what they were decoding. This song isn't trying to hide it's message behind complex metaphors and ingenious word play. It's telling you exactly what it's talking about. The message is right there, all you have to do is read.
4. It's Biggest Flaw: What Pushed it Over The Line?
What was the final factor that turned this song from average to boring? What made it cross that line? What pushed it over the edge? The fact that they made it.I love this band because they're unique while still fitting the boy band aesthetic. I've always seen them as uniquely average. Different, but done. They have their boy band type songs like Depend on You and 8 Letters. Then they have extremely unique songs like Never's All You Know and Made For. They are truly an incredible group and in the end, their talent is what ruined this song. It's not just bad or boring, it's disappointing.
The vocals are great though and are the sole thing separating this song from others, but their vocals are always amazing.
The more I write this review, the more I listen to it and the more I realize how boring this song is. Even if I did wanna listen to it, I would be sick of it after only a few listenings (I guess). It lacks any kind of originality. IDBITC may not be my style, but it's still a good song. I could still listen to it and bop along, sing the pre-chorus and the chorus because their really good. I can't bear the thought of listening to this song again.
I know the boys care about this and it means a lot to them, but the journey and the product are not the same thing. I love how much they love this song. Since if you don't love what you create how can you expect anyone else too? It's really sweet that they helped write it, that they're so proud of it, it really makes me smile, but the song isn't good. It's a boring cliche song with a boring, bad message. I'm saying boring too many times.
If you spend 10 years working on a picture and it comes out looking like you spent 10 minutes. I'll admire your dedication to it and how hard you tried, but I'll also say you wasted 10 years that you'll never get back. I won't be listening to this song again. I feel like I wasted over 15 minutes analyzing it that I'll never be able to get back.
I'm praying this month's song is better than the last two. I would rather get an average song than a bland one. Anyway, like always feel free to leave your opinion in comments. 4, bye guys. See you next chapter.
