Before I even give my thoughts on the song, I wanted to share my moment of sheer and utter stupidity the day of its release. When I read the hashtag for the first time, I thought the song was called Madat You. I spent far too long trying to figure out what the hell madat was. I even went to a few translation websites. In the end, it took me reading one of the comments for the tweet to realize it was mad at and not madat. To say I felt like an absolute moron would be an understatement. Now, with that being said, onto the review.
I don't really have any strong feelings towards Mad at You. It's not bad, there's just nothing special about it. It isn't unenjoyable per se, just kinda boring.
The Good
1. The Beat
It's a good beat. It's steady and easy to follow, as well as not being cluttered with excess sounds. I really like the contrast of the bass and the almost xylophone-like dings in the background. The beat isn't anything spectacular, but it's nice and fits the overall feel of the song.2. The Vocals
I really enjoy the way they sing. They're voices are soft enough to be calming, but not so low that they get lost in the beat. They sing clearly and steadily, but I do dislike Daniel's part. It's hard to understand. His voice is extremely breathy (I guess) and isn't strong enough to fight the loud noises in the background." You just leave me in the dark
You whisper where you are (where you are, where you are)
You're messin' up my heart (oh)."
This is the exact part I'm referring to. I had no idea what he was saying until I googled the lyrics. It's just very strange that his part is the only one that's hard to understand.3. The Balance
There's quite a bit happening while they sing. Whether that be the others coming in, the addition of miscellaneous noises, and/or the effects that are actually placed on their voices. Despite all this, none of the effects (echos, layering, ect.) over stay their welcome. They all end at just the right time and don't distract from what's actually being said. The harmony of everything happening in this song is extremely well done.4. The Chorus
This is the only part of the song I actually have a strong opinion for. I love the chorus. Jack was the best choice to sing it, he does it perfectly. It's incredible.Overall, I don't have anything against the song. And despite my mostly positive opinions I wouldn't say I like it. I'm indifferent to it. And the only thing I can say I truly don't like is probably it's glorification of a toxic relationship.
Mad at You is a perfectly average song with nothing special to love it for. I can see reasons to adore and hate it. To me, it's fine. That's really all I can say. Feel free to tell me how you feel like always.
