I already kinda talked about this song, but my thoughts on it have changed dramatically since its release. Initially I found it boring. I didn't think there was anything special about it, but I've actually grown to love it over the year.
1. The Vocals
They're amazing. They aren't overdone, but they aren't basic. The way they sing feels chilling. It's low and gentle. I can actually imagine the puffs of smoke they're voices would cause. The slight echo behind their words only adds to the chilling effect the sound has.It seems like Corbyn and Daniel are genuine hurting when they sing.
Jonah sounds almost indifferent, like he's accepted that this will keep happening, but a part of him wants to believe things could be different.
Jack and Zach sound like they could actually be talking to someone. I also adore Zach's entire section. I love the way everything goes quiet and how he pauses between sentences.
I truly adore the vocals of this song, not to mention it easily, without a doubt, has the best high note of anything they've released this year.
2. The Beat
The beat almost sounds like snow, is that weird? The bass is really crisp and reminds me of someone walking through fresh snow. It has an almost crunchy sound to it and I really do enjoy it.The snapping that starts durning Corbyn's verse seems very cold. I don't really know how to explain it, but the entire beat just feels like it's freezing. The verses have really soft noises to back them up and even when it gets loud during the choruses it still feels quiet. It feels like the beat's whispering and that really fits the style of this song.
3. The Message
This song's message reminds me of Stay With Me by Sam Smith. I love the idea that you know you've fallen for someone that doesn't want you. You know it'll never be anything more than what it is, but you still want them. And no matter how much it hurts to stay with them, you can't bare to let them go.4. The Lyrics
They actually have a decent amount of depth to them. The message isn't at all hard to understand, but if you look a little deeper, there is the potential of finding more. When it comes to this song, even if you don't need too, there is a reward it you peek between the lines.5. Originality
By this I mean in comparison to their other songs with somewhat similar ideas. Originally, I saw this song as another iteration of 8 Letters, which in of itself is kind of a paraphrased Words I Didn't Say. These two, as well as What Am I, follow the same basic idea that not saying something can hurt even more than the possible rejection if you were to just admit how you feel. The difference, however, between these three and Cold In LA is that the first three make it clear, especially for 8 Letters and What Am I, that if they were to just admit how they feel, they're feelings would be returned. These songs heavily suggest that the second half of the relationship has obvious feelings and just doesn't wanna say it first for whatever reason. The trio focuses more on the general idea that I love you, and its equivalents, are hard to say, even if you know you have nothing to be afraid of.
Cold In LA on the other hand, makes it extremely obvious that these feelings are one sided. Giving the person feeling them a more concrete reason to be afraid.
As a result, Cold In LA is a much sadder song than the previously mentioned trio and that's probably why I like it so much more. Sad endings are much more intriguing to me than happy ones. Which is why I just finished writing 21 sad oneshots.
I love the song, but it's video is so incredibly boring. It does technically put the song to pictures, so I can't call it an unfaithful video.
I did actually enjoy the part when the girl kissed Jonah, fixing the problem she indirectly caused and only continuing the toxic cycle between them, but that's the only part I like. The rest is just them singing in place.
Overall, Cold In LA has easily beaten Big Plans as my favorite song to come out of this song-a-month thing. Just like always, leave your opinions in the comments if you feel so inclined and I'll see you guys tomorrow.
Also, one last thing. I choose to give 8 Letters a different meaning than what the boys say. I interpret the song as someone unable to accept that they don't love the other person.
The line," If all it is is eight letters, Why is it so hard to say?" acknowledging the difference between simply speaking something and actually meaning what you say.
And," I've said those words before but it was a lie, And you deserve to hear them a thousand times," meaning they've told the other person over and over again in the past that they do love them because they deserve to hear it. Even if their words are lies.
Daniel and Jonah's parts explain why this individual feels they should love them, even if they don't. And the whole song is about them unable to understand why they can't just love this person and hoping that repeating those 8 letters will make it true.
Anyway, I'm actually done now. Until tomorrow! Bye!
