What Am I

I'm a little conflicted when it comes to this song and it's video. On one hand, I don't dislike, I've actually enjoyed replaying it in order to write this review, but there are things about it that make me shake my head everytime I see/hear it. So, let me stop talking and just explain what I mean.

The Good

1. The Beat
It's a good beat. It's relaxing and bouncy all at the same time. You can sway to the music and it can calm you down. It has a really nice balance and sounds like a band could easily play the instruments in front of you and it would be almost identical.

2. The Vocals
It's almost like they're actually singing in front of you. It's natural and beautiful. This song does a really good job of showing off their voices. They sound real.

3. The Video
The video fits. As previously mentioned, this whole song feels real and the video shows that. It seems like they could actually sing this to a group of people and it would sound just like this.

Some of their other songs, while good, are obviously made in a studio. Big Plans, my favorite song from them for this year is a good example. It's a good song, but if they sang it in person, it would be drastically different.

4. The Lyrics
Like everything else, they're good. They fit the simplicity of the song and add to its overall charm. They sound like they were written by everyday people.

Certain artists tend to make their songs complicated. I don't mind it, I love analyzing things as you all can probably tell, but there's something really sweet about a song that's easy to get. You don't have to be a scholar to understand and that's okay.

The Bad

1. The Vocals
I said they felt real and while it does defiantly add to the song's charm, it also makes it feel incomplete.

It doesn't sound like it was made in a studio and for a "professional" (I hate that word) song that's really important. It should sound like a producer or someone came back after the audio was recorded and tampered with it. The same goes for the beat.

2. The Video
There aren't enough guys. It's as simple as that.

The song would have you believe they met by chance, but when the video shows a bonfire with mostly girls and a handful of men (not including the boys) it seems intentional. And it makes the whole video seem more sleazy, I guess.

There would defiantly be a good mix of genders at a party/bonfire and you can count the amount of males in this video on two hands, once again, not including the boys.

3. The Lack
The chorus takes up too much of the song. I did a little math and the chorus and pre-chorus take up about 110 second of the song, give or take. That's not including the 23 seconds of silence at the beginning or the moments when only the beat is playing, that's about 22 seconds. It's only a rough estimate and the numbers could easily vary.

My point still stands, however. There are six sang part in this song and four are choruses. It wouldn't be a problem if there was some variation between them, but there really isn't. The last chorus of a song is typically the most energetic. The beats at its loudest, there are usually a lot of background vocal, but the final part of this song lacks that. There is barely any difference between the first and the last. It leaves you wanting more, kinda like a cliff-hanger.

I think this could also be a result of how simple the vocals and beat are.

4. The Hype
When I heard the first snit-bit of this song it was these lyrics.

" Tell me have you seen a sunset
Turn into a sunrise
Kiss right through the night?
'Cause we should try that sometime
Hold you 'til the morning
And if I said I'm falling
Would you just reply
"I know you are but what am I?"

And with the boys repeatedly saying things like," this song will change everything," and," so much more than 8/12." I had high expectations and with those lyrics I expected something darker. I didn't think falling meant falling in love, I thought it meant sinking. Like they were losing themselves.

So when I got this, I was disappointed. Especially when you consider all the parallels between this, 8 Letters, and Words I Didn't Say. They are very different, extremely different. It would be very difficult for you to mix them up, but the basic idea is the exact same. I didn't expect them to do another song about hiding your feelings.

I wanted something heart-wrenching and inspirational, not this. I wanted to hear the story of how two lovers began to drift apart. How they were so focused on themselves and their pain that they didn't notice how much the other was hurting. That's actually a good idea, I'm definitely writing a chapter about that.

Anyway, you can't blame me for feeling let down. I don't get what's so amazingly important about What Am I. Is it a good song? Yes, absolutely. Is it revolutionary? No, it has the same basic idea of 8 Letters, which is why I really don't understand why it was marketed the way it was.

In conclusion, I like the song, but it's overrated. Speaking of overrated, I'm going to go on a movie tangent, so if you're like me and haven't seen the third How To Train Your Dragon this is your spoiler warning. Skip to the end and I'll be back on topic.

The movie isn't that good. It's plot is so predictable. If you see any trailer for it, you can guess the whole movie. Of course Toothless would be alpha (I know that's the second one). He shouldn't be, but of course you would think that. He's the leader's dragon, it would have way more interesting if he hadn't been. He fell in love and began to neglect Hiccup? Duh, it's so cliche. It's just a well animated cliche.

Also, I hate the design of the Light Fury. She looks like a human baby and it's disturbing. She's too smooth, like she doesn't have scales. And why does she have glitter on her?

Why did they decide to give them the power of invisibility? The thing I loved about the series was the unique abilities of each species. If Toothless can conduct lighting then what's so cool about the Skrill? If they can camouflage then what's special about Change Wings? They wanted Toothless and his species to be the best so bad that they ruined all the others in the process.

Alright, back to the song. My favorite part is definitely Zach's verse. The way he sings it, the beat, and the pacing are all incredible.

Daniel is definitely that douche-bag who brings a guitar to parties. I love Daniel and he's a great person, but that doesn't change anything.

The line," looked inside your eyes," is disturbing. It sounds like he took her eyes out if there sockets and actually looked at them.

Why is Corbyn holding a ball python? They're cute, of course, but it just seems random. Why is Jonah's cup so small? It's not much bigger than a shot glass.

What monster responded to," I'm falling in love with you," with," I know you are, but what am I?" If you do that you're a jerk, I want to know your a jerk, and you should feel bad.

Why is Jack wearing a sweater to the beach? I'm all for wearing out of season clothing. I wear sweaters every season except fall and winter, but why the beach? Grains of sand are gonna get between the strands and if you wash it it'll clog you washer and now you've ruined a perfectly good sweater.

None of these are problems, just little things I noticed.

That's all I have to say. Like always leave your opinion in comments and I'll see you guys in about two weeks. Bye everyone!
