Summary: They used to come to him for everything
Jonah's POV
He used to have a job, he used to serve a purpose. He was their wise big brother, their therapist in a way. They would come to him, desperate for advice and he would do anything to help. Anything to see them smile. When had it all changed? When did his little brothers stop looking up to him? When had they stopped needing him?
It was selfish, he knew it was. He shouldn't wish problems on his boys just to feel important. He shouldn't want them to be miserable, even if it was to make them smile.
He missed late night talks with Corbyn. He missed listening to Jack rant as they skateboarded home. He missed kissing Zach's forehead in the dead of night when he couldn't sleep. He missed being the first to hear Daniel's newest beat. He missed them.
He wanted to be with Jack again, rubbing his thighs softly, promising to be right there if Corbyn didn't return his feelings. He wanted Daniel close, admitting that he had fallen in love with Zach. Helplessly asking what he should do. Looking up to him with big, wet eyes. Begging him to make it stop.
He missed smiling, being happy. He missed going to bed, rather than crying himself to sleep. He missed being confident, he missed letting his guard down around them. He missed feeling like he was important, like he wasn't replaceable.
The worst part of all this were his boys. They hadn't treated him any differently. He and Daniel still teased each other. He still held Corbyn close when ever possible. He still rolled his eyes at how stupid Jack and Zach could be. So, he didn't have an excuse. He had absolutely no reason to be afraid. He had nothing to blame the little voice on. The voice whispering to him that he didn't matter. That they didn't love him.
" Jonah!" He almost jumped off the couch, huge steele orbs darting around the room." Sorry, Jonie. I didn't mean to scare you," Zach apologized. Rubbing his shoulder with the pad of his thumb.
" I've been calling your name for like 5 minutes," Jonah was just glad he hadn't started crying." Sorry, I was... I-I was just thinking. What's up?" He never stuttered.
" We were gonna get some food. Do you wanna come?" Zach hadn't moved his hand," no, I'm good." He mumbled.
" Are you okay, bro?" His heart throbbed," yeah, I'm fine."
" Babe! Is he coming?!" Daniel called from the top of the stairs.
" No!" Dark chocolate pools had yet to leave his face. Even if Jonah couldn't bring himself to meet them.
" What? Why not?" Corbyn pouted, leaning against the banister. When had he come down here?
" I just don't want too," he muttered.
" What's wrong with Joan?" Jack worried, Daniel at his side. Their stares should never make him so uncomfortable, his skin was burning.
" He won't tell me," Zach admitted, he wanted to disappear. He wanted them to leave, for the first time in years.
" That's because nothing's wrong," he repeated, jumping hard when a head rested on his own." You can't lie to us," the touch was Zach, but the voice was Daniel. His throat was closing.
" Fine," his bandmates were hopping over the back of the couch less than a second later. All, but Zach getting comfortable against the cushions. The youngest was nuzzled close to his chest. He held him tight, his heart racing and skipping beats all at once.
" Talk to us," Zach whispered into his neck." I feel useless," his voice was blank and if it wasn't for the boy in his lap, his entire body would be numb.
" Why?" He looked to Corbyn, he saw the way he flinched at his empty stare.
" Because you guys don't need me anymore," confusion, they didn't understand." You used to come to me. I-I... you used to need me. I used to be important."
" Used to be?" Jack whispered to Daniel.
" You guys used to love me, look up to me. But... but that all changed. You don't need me anymore. I don't serve a purpose. The band doesn't need me, there's nothing stopping you guys from... f-from... from-"
" Stop. Stop! Stop," Daniel was in tears, the sight broke him. Dead orbs became wet. His shirt was sticking to his skin, Zach clinging to him. Corbyn was a mess against Jack, who had his face buried in his hair.
" You aren't useless," Zach whimpered. Jonah pulled him closer.
" You were never useless and... a-and you never will be. Jonah, it doesn't matter that we don't come to you. And it's not because we don't need you. We just... haven't had any problems," Daniel tried, chocking on his sobs.
" We love you," Jack spoke next." Jonah you're our big brother. We do need you, we always will."
" We love you so much, Jonie. I love you. Please, promise you won't forget that," Big, wet brown eyes looked up to him. The other boys were just as desperate. He couldn't stand it. He opened his arms, they stood immediately.
They piled on top of him, hugging him so tight he could barely breathe. But, he was just so happy to have them close. To know they still cared.
His heart was racing and his body tingling. His heart had never been this light. But he knew, deep down, this wasn't enough. Their brotherly affection, their platonic love. He wanted more, he needed more.
But for right now, with them so close. With them so worried, broken. He could hold on to this. And he would dream of more at night. And, one day, he would admit it. He would tell them the truth. He had too.
" I promise."
