Summary: Since Daniel won't be there for real Christmas, he and Corbyn exchange a special gift early
Daniel's POV
" Corby! Corby, guess what?!" The younger stumbled as I leapt at him, causing my arms to go tight around him. Pressing my chest to his backpack. Some strange ache vanishing at knowing he wouldn't fall. His head perched awkwardly atop his neck in an attempt to pout back at me.
" Dani, you can't keep doing that. I'm gonna fall one day," he whined to me.
" Nuh uh," my head shaking as my arms slipped from his chest to my sides. Corbyn turning to face me now that he could.
" How do you know?" Milky cheeks puffing up, bottom lip hanging slightly.
" Because I would never let you fall," I answered obviously, the unspoken "duh" clear because of course I wouldn't. Why would he even think that?
" R-really?" His once pale face now dusted a sweet pink.
It felt like seeing him this way lit a small fire in me. My whole body burning as I looked away, rocking slowly from my tip-toes to the heels of my feet.
I hated when he looked at me like that. It always made my cheeks hot.
" Y-yeah, of course," I could never talk normally after making his skin change color.
" What kind of best friend would I be if I did?"
He took ahold of my hand gently. My eyes drifting up to him. He was smiling at me, face still red.
" A really bad one," he giggled as his grin caused his candy pink cheeks to squish.
I couldn't help a shy smile of my own. Biting down on my lip while I carefully laced our fingers together.
" Exactly."
" Come on," he tugged forward softly in the direction of a wooden table," you can tell me your news while we wait for our parents, okay?"
I stumbled after him, allowing my friend to lead the way, wondering if there would ever be a time when holding his hand didn't make my body feel like it was made of jelly.
Maybe years from now, when we were older and in middle school. I liked the idea of still being with Corbyn in middle school, it made my heart happy. I didn't ever wanna let him go.
We sat side by side on the table. Corbyn turned to look at me.
" Okay, what were you gonna say?" He was smiling at me again.
" What?" Corbyn's eyes were so pretty. They were like the sky on a sunny day, but they were better than the sky. A lot better.
" You had something to tell me. Remember?" His head tipping to the right, brows furrowed.
He didn't look as pretty like that. I don't like it when he looks at me like that.
" Oh!" He brightened at my words and I grinned at him. That was a much prettier face. I like it more than the other one.
" Yeah, I wanted to tell about the trip my family's taking for Christmas."
" Ooo! Where are you going!?"
" To... umm... origin? No, that wasn't it," I stared down at my lap. Lips hanging," ori... ora... ore... Oregon! That's what it's called!"
" Oregon?" His head tilting again. Clear blue eyes sparkling with wonder," where's that, Dani?"
" I don't know," I shrugged honestly," but Mommy says I was born there."
