I decided to stay.
On my fifth day there, Cody took Mae to be registered as a citizen. He was nineteen, so the judge believed his story.
It'd been about a year before Mae said her first words.
"D-Dada." She'd stated grumpily as Toby shook a rattling toy too close to her. He was dumbfounded.
"W-what?"
"N-no. Dada! Dada!" Mae seemed just as surprised, then delighted at the new power. She reached her chubby hands up to him. He smiled and lifted her off the ground, spinning in a way that made her squeal with delight. He then held her close in a hug.
She turned and reached out to me with one of those cutely chubby hands. "Mom-my. Mommy!" She dubbed me. She had one hand balling up Toby's green shirt, and the other she used to name us, squealing in delight each time we would smile.
Jess was Mama. Cody was Daddy.
