"M-mistletoe? Are you sure that's a good idea?" I asked, watching Jess hang it with a devilish grin.
"Of course it is. Ya know... You and Toby... Nudge nudge, wink wink." Her words were garbled by nails and I was holding the ladder steady. She turned and winked at me. Her hood was up, shading her face, letting me know that she would go play video games as soon as she was done decorating.
Mae was in her bedroom, sleeping late. Days of the week mean nothing on her week-long winter break. The boys were setting up the fake tree in the main room. We'd wait until Mae was awake before decorating it.
For now, Jess insisted on nailing up mistletoe and taping twinkle lights around door frames and windows. Tinsel was also used. It was eight. Mae wouldn't be up for an hour.
I carefully wrapped the gifts, starting with Mae's, in festive designs, labeling them immediately. Jess would wrap mine. I hide the gifts under my bed. They'll be under the tree by midnight. Nine. Mae'd be up soon. I cook breakfast for her and leave it out. She wouldn't question it.
