With war on the horizon, everyone was clinging to their loved ones, trying to make the most of what could very well be their last days with them. No one knew what Voldemort and his army were planning but it wasn't likely that everyone would come out happily on the other side. You wondered why your best friend didn't grow closer to you like everyone else did to their loved ones. Hermione was clearly scared for what was going to happen like everyone else but every time you entered a room she would leave and made sure to make conversations as minimal as possible. You hoped it was just her way of coping but with a shield around the castle and a battle about to commence, you needed to know why she was putting so much distance between the two of you.

You caught her in a hallway and demanded an answer.

"Please Hermione, I just need to know if I've done anything to hurt you. One of us might die out there and I can't lose you knowing that we weren't on good terms," you begged.

She let out a sigh. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so cold, I just was too scared."

"Scared of what?"

"Telling you the truth," she exclaimed. "I hoped that if you hated me it would be easier if something happened to you, that it wouldn't hurt as much but since I've tried to push you away, it's just hurt me more and more."

You tried to give her the benefit of the doubt and offered her a gentle smile, needing to know what she was talking about before it was to late.

"What truth do you need to tell me," you asked. "You can tell me anything Hermione, never doubt that."

"I think I'm in love with you and I'm terrified," she blurted out.

A laugh escaped you, realising how stupid the two of you had been the whole time. You had always liked Hermione more than a friend; it just took facing your mortality for the two of you to admit how you truly felt about one another.

"What?" She asked, offended by your laughter.

You shook your head, leaning in to press your lips firmly to hers. "I've been in love with you too."

The two of your wrapped into a tight embrace, clinging to each other, hoping that things were able to turn out better than you expected it to.

"When we get through this, we can continue this conversation but for now we have a battle to fight," you apologised.

"I've got your back if you've got mine."

"Deal."
