"What a cutie-patootie!" Taehyung gushed loudly as he carried Taemin in his arms. "I wonder who you resemble more: your pretty mom or your not-so-attractive dad?"
From the kitchen, Eun-hye laughed. "His pretty mom, of course!"
"Well, we can't have Taemin looking like a girl now, can we? Maybe he has his grandfather's genes?" Taehyung asked, waiting for an answer.
Ever since his trip to the Jeon household, Taehyung had been trying to ask about the man whom everybody seemed to avoid talking about. He didn't make an enormous deal out of it at first, chucking up the evasion as a bad memory that Eun-hye would rather forget. But when the photo surfaced, compounded with his family's odd behaviour around the subject, Taehyung suspected that something's up. To test his theory, Taehyung would bring up Jung-kook's name once in a while.
"So, Eun-hye, your father Jung-kook, is it? Was he anything like you?"
The woman nearly dropped the knife she was holding. Unsure whether to answer her father-in-law, Eun-hye paused and wondered where his recent curiosity came from.
"Umm...he's very mild-mannered, I would say. But in terms of looks, I think he's blessed in that department."
Taehyung nodded. He wanted to hear more but realized he had to tread carefully.
"Could you tell me more about him? You know, just so I can picture Taemin when he grows up."
Eun-hye sauntered out of the kitchen carrying a tray of cut-up fruits and placed it on the coffee table. She sat down beside Taehyung who was toying with a pacifier.
"Don't you worry about our son, Papa. Taemin will be fine because we'll raise him with all the love and affection that he deserves."
The doting figure looked at Eun-hye. "Is there something wrong, darling? You can always tell me," he said, placing his hand over one of hers.
"Sorry Papa, I'm just tired," Eun-hye glanced down. "I think I'll take a nap."
Taehyung recognized when the conversation was over and handed the baby to his mother, who took Taemin upstairs.
Perhaps he was overthinking, but Taehyung sensed the difference between Eun-hye's nonchalance during the engagement dinner some time ago when she first mentioned her father's name and her recent hesitance regarding the topic. It seemed less a paranoia but more of a hunch that his family was keeping a secret from him.
